Why bundle pricing works so well for digital products! 📦✨

After being on indiehackers.com for almost 2 years, one of the coolest tactics I’ve found to sell digital products is the use of bundle pricing.

A year or so ago when COVID started, I built buildfaster.co: a site where I sold some hand-made and ready-to-use HTML templates. After 6 months of trying new things and trying to expand the sales, I amounted to only $200 🤷‍♂️.

Over the past year, I’ve been analyzing and looking for new directions for a template site I might build again in the future. Out of all of the strategies I saw being used, the coolest and most helpful one was the use of "Bundle Pricing".

What is bundle pricing?

It is taking all or some of your digital products and letting the user buy that bundle for a smaller price. Think of it as one of those "Buy ____ apples for only ___!" signs at your grocery store.

Buy 10 nifty apples for only $2!, sign

Someone isn't going to by 10 apples for $0.25 each... they would rather save $0.50 and buy the bundle! It's a win-win!

Awesome example: Cruip.com

One site that has taken this strategy and has really excelled is Cruip by @Davidep86 and @pasqualevitiello. For example, most of Cruip’s templates are around $39.

Templates from Cruip

This way, if someone only needs one template, they can buy one for the good price and be on there way. However, if they want 2, it will total around to $78. But then they see that the bundle option is $69 for all templates.

Buy for $68 option

Right there is the tipping point. The user is like, "sweet!! I'll be paying $9 less in the end and will still get the rest of the pack!".

I think this leads to increased loyalty and more engagement to Cruip (or whatever site you are buying from)! (The most awesomely awesome scenario!! 🌟)

How you can apply this to your site!

Well, don't use the exact same price Cruip has! 😂

Make it fit your scale and scope of products. It is crucial to have your bundle price at the right price.

If you have, let's say, 10 products for $30 each, the total bundle value would be $300. So model it around how Cruip or other sites have done it. Maybe "the top of the mountain" is at 2-3 templates before the user should want to buy the bundle.

So for those 10 $30 products, make the bundle priced at around $60-80.

This is definitely something that is intriguing me at the moment and I can't wait to try it when I build up another template site in the future!

Hope you can find use in this too!

Hey, thanks for reading through this. If you have any thoughts or comments regarding this neat topic, share in the comments below or shoot me an email!

This is awesome, you can use this to also bundle features in your SaaS pricing!

    1. 1

I'm curious how that would fit into a G/B/B freemium pricing model (not sure TBH, but intrigued)

    2. 1

True! More and more indie hackers should consider using it already in their next app (myself included haha)

I love this! Working on building enough information products to be able to bundle (I'm building ~1/mo) and this is a great cut and dry guide.

What niche of template sites are you thinking of building?

    1. 1

      Nice! Good for you!

Hmm, I love design portfolio templates that are like professional grade and really fancy (like you would find on awwwards.com), but its tough to sell those out because when someone wants a fancy fancy portfolio, it should he unique from others. and if others have the same template, then that ruins the point kinda hahaha.

But I’ve found that SaaS landing templates and UI kits are the most in demand so I might be going down this route.

      1. 2

        Thanks!

Shoot, I've always wanted one of those awwwards level portfolios but don't have the design chops (or spare time) to DIY it. Maybe sell those 1 by 1 and have some drastic variations so you could re-use the basics without damaging the design?

        I'm thinking:

        • loading animations
        • fonts
        • color scheme and darkmode vs lightmode
        • text alignment
        • icons
        • tickers, button animations, hover states
        • breadcrumbs
        • Easter eggs

SaaS landing pages are definitely in demand! My team and I build exclusively on Webflow, but I am constantly finding founders who have coded their own landing pages - and could use a helping hand.

        1. 1

          Yes to both! Great ideas.

I plan to explore SaaS and portfolio ones in the future.

Question: would it bother you if you bought a Awwwards-level portfolio template and 50 others had the same one? That’s kinda that main problem here I think.

I really want to pursue a shop like this but I just don’t know how people would feel in that situation. I for one, would want a unique one from everyone on the internet. 🤷‍♂️

          1. 1

It would bother me, yes, but I think you could change it enough so it wasn't obvious/irritating.

Case in point - I used the Webflow Gumroad clone to build my agency site in a under a week. It's not perfect, but I get lots of compliments on it, especially the copy (which is my sweet spot).

I've yet to have someone ask/mention/notice that it's based on the Gumroad clone and the main things I changed were colors, fonts, and moving the sections around. even the button hover animations are the same.

Price them really high, make them super different and don't let on that you're re-using sections. I think it can be done.

And once you have a library of sections and an SOP on how to mix-and-match to get a fully custom look you'll be unstoppable!

            1. 1

Great tips! Haha yeah now that I know it was from the Gumroad template I can kindaaaa see it… but still it does look distinctly different and has a nice vibe!

              Thanks so much!

You're very welcome! best of luck!

Years ago I introduced bundled pricing for architectural visualization video training. It was a game changer for the company when we bundled training that followed the typical customer journey on how to be a professional. We offered different beginner, intermediate, and advanced training. Then we A/B tested if people would prefer beg. / int. / adv. in one software versus beginner-only training in multiple software. In addition to having free content to support the bundle, we found that most bought the intermediate packages of similar software & then they later bought the advanced.
