Hey IndieHackers,
There is a distinct disconnect from the reality of on the ground job seekers in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. The Bay and Silicon Valley have transformed economic centers of growth for the United States for centuries. Yet, a great question arises for those searching for jobs in the Bay, Silicon Valley, Inland California, and all parts of LA, why have Californians been subjugated to a centuries long employment drought? This drought has seeped into the culture of hyper normalization of unemployment within California. It is disheartening yet, sets a hyper predictive tone for the rest of the nation’s current "Corporate First" hiring market.
As a graduate student and researcher, I have been exploring the paradox that Californians have lived with for centuries: high unemployment, severe job insecurity, pressure-cooker corporate cultures, and systemically restricted access to basic UN protected human rights. California'a paradox is relevant to the disconnect experienced nationwide with the ever disparaging severe job shortage occurring nationwide.
Why this Matters to IndieHackers and Builders?
We cannot separate the struggles of the job seeker from the success of the startup founder. The two ecosystems are deeply symbiotic.
For B2C Founders: For founders operating on B2C client acquisition as their base, the current employment market nationwide, causes difficulties for startup founder to obtain B2C clients. As those consumers are unable to pay for a SaaS service if, they have to choose between paying their rent, utilities, and groceries-- while looking for unemployment. They choose security over our innovations, which adds to the power struggle.
For B2B Founders: Corporate buyers are under intense pressure to freeze budgets, reduce software sprawl, and operate with leaner headcount. B2B prospects are sticking strictly to bare necessities, making customer acquisition and retention significantly harder for early-stage startups
The same is applicable for B2B consumers that, are under intense pressure to not spend money, with less personnel. Many B2B businesses are focused on focusing on their bare necessities, without having to spend money outside their method of doing things. Making it difficult for many newly founded startups on both end to obtain customers and to support consumers with paying for their product. If our target markets are financially constrained, our startups cannot grow. The conversation shouldn't be "job seekers vs. founders"—we need each other's input to bridge the gap between B2B and B2C communities and build sustainable solutions
The conversation isn't about separating the job seeker from the startup founder. The problem is about seeing that all roads are interconnected and symbiotic. We all need each other's input in the startup community to assist in ending the disconnect of the B2B and B2C communities.
Are you noticing this disconnect in your own target markets? How is the current hiring and economic climate impacting your churn, customer acquisition, or launch strategy? Let’s discuss below.
