Hey guys, I just wanted to share some thoughts on content messaging since I didn't want this only contained in a small email thread. A consultant reached out to me asking questions about this (probably using it to use me as a lead) but I didn't want to not provide my thoughts about it. Especially since I just went through a year figuring this stuff out.
The original product is often wrong but the vision usually has the real potential. Nobody wants to create a bad product but the first few rounds of execution produce terrible products. So the goal isn't high revenue because the product sucks. Early on, focus on adoption and traction for the story.
A founder's content mistake is creating messaging for the product and not creating a concise narrative about the mission. Features are secondary to selling a product. Critics and consultants also fail to realize the stage of their content marketing, misguiding founders down the wrong path.
Distilling why you exist into 7-9 words or less.
Hard to work on messaging when your product churn is high and sales are low. Unfortunately, these visible threats mask the hidden threat of poor marketing. Marketing, sales, and product will challenge your existence every day, so this point is often contextual.
Making customers happier is the ultimate goal, not having a sexy landing page. None of the above matters that much if your product makes people happy. Word of mouth is cheaper and more powerful.
Hope this helps someone!
