Why did I stop coding to create a Udemy course after 10 years.

I never thought nor felt that I'm a top notch coder. (Then again, I also don't name my variables "bla1", "bla2", "bla3"!)

I never had a degree as well (Well I took 1 course in Psychology and ever since when someone asks me "What did you study", I simply answer "Psychology"... C'mon, that's not really lying, is it?)

Once I finished my long East Asia trip more than 10 years ago, it was pretty obvious to me that I'm not going to any job interview. I am going to create my own ideas, and the emerging mobile apps world looked like a great opportunity.

Adobe announced Adobe Air, which if you knew Flash & Action Script at the time, it meant that you can easily create iOS & Android apps - "Spot on, just for me!" I thought after I had my fair share of silly animation clips I created.

"What do I know about programming? More than enough.
What do I know about publishing mobile apps? Nada."

So before going for my grand idea (A fitness app) I wanted to waste all my amateur mistakes which are inevitably bound to happen, on a lighter app.

"Let's make a light app, a casual app. People like to draw, people also like the beach... Let's create an app called Sand Draw"
I went to the beach, and started to take texture samples with my phone's camera, I even chased a pigeon later on, while trying to capture it on video (now it runs from the wave in the app, this pigeon will live forever in the virtual realm!)
The silly beach inspector chased after me then, thinking I'm taking videos of girls on the beach...

Long story short, Sand Draw became a hit overtime, and funny enough to this date my most successful app. The fitness apps had their fare share as well of millions of downloads, you're welcome to check out this disturbingly whacky video I made about my journey - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3dZ6Xop6G0

Luckily, up to this date I didn't feel the need to take a freelancing job.
After more than dozen projects, mostly mobile (and many trips abroad) I felt that subduing myself into the coding world, investing at least 80% of my time in purely technical aspects of projects, is not the best approach for a couple of reasons:

  1. I had enough of it :-) Simple. There is more to life than coding (I had a life, but even 7-9 hours a day is actually most of your "life" right?

  2. "If you don't use it, you lose it."
I think you need to have diverse skills, and I enjoy learning different skills. I think it is especially important in today's ever changing world.

  3. I wanted to get to people around the world in other ways, not only as an app-users connection. I see human connections vital to healthy life, and I feel it.

  4. Creating video was a secondary passion which is calling me.

  5. You might work on a project and put your soul into it, ending up with not enough users to get a decent ROI, since your marketing doesn't work. Maybe if I create an organic marketing channel, on top of it I can create a product?

And so a few months ago I set myself the goal to create a Udemy course, which is a nice goal since it might also turn to a surprising source of income, and might present an actual opportunity to make a safe shift of direction. (I also don't like the band "One Direction")

The course was released about 2 months ago, I already have close to 30 students - it summarizes a lot of lessons I learned about mobile apps during those past years:

I will update after a couple of months after I get more insights & experience in the field of course, right now I'm just a newbie =-)

I just realized I wrote A LOT, so kudos to you if you got that far, thank you for your time. (AMA of course)
