Why do people use dark mode?

I love dark mode mostly to reduce eyestrain from staring a bright screens. I would say however that many websites and web apps don't put enough contrast in their dark themes which ironically re-introduces eyestrain.
Totally agree!
Something I don't see mentioned often is the impact of blue light on the eyes. A lot people say its a bunch of crap, and blue light has no impact on sleep or vision ect. but there are those people who say blue light has a subconscious on our psyche and our ability to function.
I'm not someone who thinks blue light is the reason for the world's ills, but I do find it impacts my ability to produce melatonin and go to sleep at a proper time so I try to use blue-light glasses as well as dark mode to limit my exposure as much as possible.
I try to keep my mac on "Night mode" because I've heard that it removes the blue light. Anyone else tried this? I like it, but sometimes it gets in the way when I need to see the true colors of something (like a new design).
Interesting to debate whether or not dark screen has the same benefit to your eyes as the "reading mode" on our devices!
it feels better.
I try not to look at screens after 8pm because I find that it impairs my sleep. If I read books before bed I end up falling asleep easily and staying asleep for longer. But if I do have to look at screens to respond to some issue with one of my startups, I will for sure use darkmode whenever possible because the blue light from screens jacks me up and makes it hard for me to sleep. I will often also use blue light blocking glasses because not all apps/platforms have dark mode. Hope this helps!
Awesome take!
As a developer it's clear: according to terminals you're used to dark background and light typo.
Gamers love it, because the fancy keyboard and mouse lights are not getting outshined by the screens
Fair enough, haven't thought of it from a developer's perspective!
Maybe there are just too many light mode, so dark mode is a stand-out. Though I like light mode better
I don't really get the hype either although i think a new/current trend is customizable UIs.
I recently switched all my apps to light mode(code editors/IDEs are still dark though). This is most probably my personal habit I developed by using dark-mode code editors. I get tensed or automatically get in the zone as soon as I get a dark theme.
I do the same thing! For some reason when I am using an app/website I prefer light mode, but when I am developing its dark mode all the way
Sometimes I'll look at my phone in the middle of the night while rocking a baby back to sleep. That's when you really appreciate dark mode.
Light mode make me feels like someone put a powerful light on my face.
because why not?

So you keep switching the light mode to dark from each app?
