Why do so few people follow each other on IH?
On other social networks or forums, it seems like connecting to another person, whether through commenting on a post or what have you, is often enough to decide to follow that person, and to receive a follow back in return.
Haven't you noticed, though, that there are very few hackers on IH that have more than a few followers?
Why do you think it is so difficult to build a following here?
We should all connect more and become more invested in each other's queries and posts. We are, after all, brothers and sisters in hackdom!
Honestly I am not sure what benefit do I have in following another user. Am I going to see the activity of who I follow? Where?
Well i've followed @csallen now so I can actually answer this question for myself.
Perhaps @Courtland or @Channing can chip in here. I feel like they've been pushing out a lot of new features, and there will probably be something in the works to make Followers/Following beneficial
Primarily because following someone doesn't accomplish anything (yet) besides adding a bookmark to them on your profile.
If I'm not wrong, IH, unlike social networks, does not offer a personalized community feed based on who you follow.
So it's pretty much the same even if you don't follow someone. You'll have to browse the Community Page to keep track of posts.
For me, the community is still young enough that I'm trying to figure out who I want to follow. There are folks working on certain projects I might find interesting, or with perspectives I find interesting, or with funny usernames. I'll follow those folks eventually, but I want to keep tabs on participation and activity before I go adding folks.
Quality over quantity for me, and the community is still so fresh, I haven't had enough time to make sense of it all in my head yet. Also haven't had enough time to become more active, myself.
Following doesn't do anything yet.
Maybe stalkers? Maybe, body odor? Maybe, wearing a tinfoil hat?
Because people here like talking about themselves.
They want people to notice them. They're not here to notice others. Being indie is a lonely business IRL.
This is the same problem with Hacker News. Has anybody actually met someone through their profile pages at HN?
