Why Do You Upvote on Product Hunt?

Here are my 3 reasons:

  1. I know the maker and want to support the launch πŸš€πŸš€
  2. I'm already using the product and I love it 😍
  3. It's just a cool product 😎

Products I don't want to lose. Upvote is more like a bookmark button for me.

This is very true - I wish that Product Hunt had a proper bookmark feature that worked across the site for this reason!

    1. Great name
    2. Ooh, why didn't I think of that!
    3. Oh shit, I did think of this but never did anything. nice!
    1. 1

      Ha ha love it!

  3. 3

When the name is so good it makes me mad I didn't think of it.

    1. 2

Ha ha @AndrewKamphey said the same!

  4. 3

I save good ideas I could re-implement in future and helpful materials & services for my needs

    1. 1

I actually created a collection for this purpose!

  5. 2

    Pretty much the same here

I upvote something I might use, usually as a bookmark to check them later on.

I also like how my profile features a selection of products I vibed with.

    1. 1

Love it - curating your profile via the upvotes!

  7. 2

I upvote useful and efficient products that are solving a problem that I'm facing.

    1. 2

      Yeah I do this too

  8. 2

If I think the product is great, I want to help get it more exposure. Simple!

    1. 1

and that's the whole point of the platform!

  9. 2

I am a believer that every vote counts and that 'someone' does care about the work you put out. I look at the products, do a mini-test/review and if I like it, I upvote it. My small way of saying thank you.

    1. 1

Exactly - I've ended up a user for many of the products I've upvoted!

  10. 2

    1, 2, and 3...really depends. More often it's 1 and 3.

  11. 2

I use it as a bookmark, so when I need some tools I go on PH

    1. 1

I hadn't actually thought of this as a use case but you're right!

  12. 2

Sometimes I upvote a discussion that I'm interested in. That way I help it to be more visible and get more comments to have more insight. :)

  13. 2

This is a very useful service that helps me.

I think there is a bit of genetics going on here.

We unconsciously and constantly play the tit-for-tat game.

We help other makers with an upvote, hoping we'll get some help back for our future launch.

My 2 cents after reading The Origins of Virtue πŸ“–

    1. 2

There's no harm in that - we all need a little help in our launches

  15. 2

It's a combination of great product for me and also supporting the maker even when I don't know them personally. Pay it forward, they say.

    1. I wanted to build something similar, I hope it'll take off.
    2. I can see the amount of work that was put into the product.
    3. Lone maker with a great idea but without a huge number or any followers (I think for these kind of people it's really hard to reach the top of the list and they appreciate every single upvote, even more than those who hit the first place every time they launch something)
    1. 1

Something to be said for seeing that it's a great idea and it needs some love.

  17. 2

    All of these reasons
Then if I really like something I collect it and go back to check the progress

    1. 1

Yeah bookmarking seems to be a thing from the comments here

    1. This thing was there this entire time?
    2. Supporting small startups from time to time
    3. How is this product even free?
