Why every IH should be on Twitter

This is the advice I wish I got six months before building my first product. Because let's face it, as you may have realized, building an amazing product, does not guarantee you success.

The distribution of your product is as relevant as the product itself. Public boards like Hacker News or Product Hunt are good distribution channels, but they are not enough: likely you only get one chance to promote every 6 months, and luck can play a big factor in it.

Twitter can become your best partner to promote your product, take control of your distribution channels, and build an audience that cares about what you are working on.

As an example, my January stats:
Twitter Stats

Why I love Twitter:

  • Low time investment: at a very generous estimate of 5 minutes per Tweet, 448 Tweets only take about 1 hour of my time every day, which leaves me plenty of time left to build the product.
  • Low cost per impressions (CPM): getting 127K organic monthly impressions would cost ~ $1,270 on Facebook Ads. That is more than my monthly runaway.
  • Bring awareness to my product: At 12K monthly profile visits, I get to pitch my product to every person that reads my bio.
  • Awesome Community: some of the people I engage with truly care about me the product, we interact, engage in discussions, give each other advice and support our goals.
  • Networking with investors: so far I had 3 office hours, all of them have come through Twitter; two of them were inbound. More importantly, I have identified who I want as a partner for our startup once we are ready to get funding.
