Why hasn't anyone built a successful Meetup competitor?

Meetup was a pretty amazing successful app a few years ago, but they sold and now it costs almost $80 monthly just to host your own meetup. So the only ones on there are massive big groups ran by organisations, usually with an ulterior motive of upselling to the event.

It's such a shame, you move to a new city and now you can't find that niche group of people who like paper straws on a Friday night out etc.

I'm surprised it hasn't been disrupted. It seems a pretty easy app to build and a pretty easy selling/acquisition proposition with the incumbent so poorly managed.
