Why I am building yet another remote jobs website?

Hi,

I am working on a remote job site in my free time, but there are many well-performing remote job sites out there, so why am I working on a remote job site?

Backstory

When I was ready to get back to a full-time job after a short gap which I took last year, I wanted to concentrate on remote first jobs as I believe that is the future of work. I used to search for remote jobs from many remote job list pages and apply, But every now and then, my friends used to point to opportunities that didn't come to my attention during search. After few more such instances, I wanted to dig into why I could not find these opportunities when I search and eventually wrote a job scraper on my own designed for my needs.

Later, when I landed a job, I wanted to extend the help which I received from my friends by paying forward, so I shared the data I had from my scraper as a google sheet.

Interest in the product

To my surprise, the first sheet kind of got a good reception, and I started getting mails if the sheet will be shared every month. With more interest, I committed to sharing a sheet every month.

Again the reception was good, and this time I got feedback on how this can be of better use than just a plain google sheet. So I am building www.remotejob.page in my spare time.

Right now, we have a basic UI with category-based filtering. The next goal is to allow users to search for jobs based on skills.

What about competition?

I know that many other sites are solving the same problem, but from my personal experience, the number of jobs we see on these sites is very less compared to the actual number of remote jobs out there. So I am concentrating on creating a robust solution that maximizes for as many roles as possible, and at present, you see the data extracted from around ~6K career pages. And I believe with more data and a better search layer in place. This has the potential to become a go-to place for finding remote jobs.

Apart from all this, I believe building successful products is like exercising a muscle, and one can become better only by building something, so I want to get used to building products, and eventually, I will figure out how to make them successful.
