Why I’m building in Twitter space, even though others are leaving

Hey there! I decided to share my story of building in Twitter space.

You see, the recent changes in Twitter API pricing have caused a lot of fantastic projects to disappear. Most tools’ creators out there are not able to pay $42k/mo for Twitter API access. We couldn’t afford that too. It's no wonder that many developers are scared to build on the platform.

When API pricing changes were announced, we got scared. No one knew what API will look like and if any team will be able to build on top of Twitter.

But here's the thing: those changes didn't affect us because we weren't relying on the API that much. Sure, it'll change our roadmap, but we don’t need access to the $42k API to continue working. Probably in the future, we will need to pay for it in order to build more features, but now we can grow our product with Free access.

It took us some time to decide, but we decided to pursue building our Twitter tool.

You might wonder why, but let me break it down for you in simple terms:

  • There's always some level of risk in any venture. We're not blind to it. But at the same time, we're solving a problem for ourselves, and we believe it's a problem worth tackling.
  • Twitter needs improvement. People are constantly tweeting like crazy, but most people don't build genuine connections. Twitter is filled with giveaways that give users a huge following but result in poor relationships. We want to make Twitter a better place for everyone.
  • A lot of shutdown projects were valuable. I believe that some things in this market have been validated, we just need to find a new way to solve these problems without paid access.

What exactly are we working on?

  • Our tool is called Icebreaker - for now, it helps write DMs that people are willing to reply to. Thanks to this, you can easily reach out to more people without being spammy or sending generic messages. Our GPT prompts save a lot of time researching a context.
You can find it at this link: https://dmicebreaker.carrd.co/
  • It's especially great for introverts who find networking challenging, and it's also perfect for salespeople, networkers, and anyone looking to make valuable connections.
  • Our plan is to build a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system specifically for engagement on Twitter. Icebreaker is just a beginning.
It'll remind you to reach out to people in your network, follow up with them, and even help each other out. Like your personal assistant for Twitter.

What our next steps are?

  • Use Free API access to build the next features
  • Find more customers to be profitable
  • Build as many CRM features as possible using free Twitter API
  • Pay for Paid API access to finish building CRM (or deal without paid access somehow)

We are committed to our vision of building a CRM for engagement. I believe there are a lot of things that should be done to make Twitter a better space. What do you think about our decision? Do you think we're on the right track? We'd love to hear your thoughts!
