Tldr; I launched a product that I don’t expect to monetize (anytime soon) and spend most of my time working on my other, long-term monetized app. While the first app is mostly done and doesn’t require too much maintenance, it still distracts from working on the second application (albeit not much).
Slightly longer:
Last November, after spending ~6 months working on it, I launched ListenAddict. It’s working great, and it’s now in a place where it automatically generates new content for me. I’m also able to import more data sources and instantly create hundreds of new pages in a matter of minutes. Google is working for me now, and my SEO levels are slowly climbing. This is all well and good, but I’m not monetizing it right now (it’s not something individuals will pay for). At some point, if it’s high enough within search results, I may put on some affiliate links, or ads, or maybe ads + subscription (to remove ads). But in general, the value provided by the app is pretty low, and I mostly built it because it was a problem I had for myself. So I’m using it and that’s really all that matters- though it would be nice if it at least paid for itself. The main thing is it’s a long-term play which requires good SEO, so I built it first so it could start climbing up the Google ladder.
I’m currently working on Producer. It’s my long-term play at creating something that people will pay for. Given how many people are creating new Podcasts and YouTube channels, and the fact that I have a YouTube channel myself means it’s 1. Scratching my own itch, and 2. Something I’m sure other people can/will use. I have a lot of different ideas, and I’ve already interviewed quite a few Podcasters and YouTubers about their workflow (but am also interested in more - so please reach out and I’d love to chat about your workflow!).
The issue is, of course, that I have way too much to do. Producer doesn’t get all the attention it needs. I’m constantly juggling working in swathes on Producer, but then I have to jump back to ListenAddict, just to make sure everything is going well, not to mention adding more data sources from time-to-time.
All this to say, focus.
Deliver.
Proceed.
The nice thing is ListenAddict is mostly self-sufficient at this time, and doesn’t take much upkeep. But it would be even nicer if I didn’t have to do anything at all.
