My last startup was successful, with an exit to a FANGMA company. One of the reasons we made it was because we figured out how to focus on a specific type of customer. In 2009, I read this amazing post by one of my favourite VCs, Mark Suster wrote an insanely influential piece that I have taken to heart for many years: Most Startups Should Be Deer Hunters (https://bothsidesofthetable.com/most-startups-should-be-deer-hunters-7fdecf58f4f6)
The gist of the article is this:
Today: my latest startup is called Please Sign Me (https://pleasesign.me). We're making it easy to collect digital signatures without leaving Google Docs. And we made it free for anyone with a Gmail account.
We made it free for Gmail users because of the above philosophy. I want to provide value to everyone while still focusing on my core business. There are so many other alternatives too, that convincing your average individual to pay us is an exercise in futility.
Not to mention, the amazing utility of a truly free digital signature product with built in network effects. Each signature request a Gmail user might send will reach someone who has never heard of us, and that person might have a business need.
So we're focusing on businesses! Businesses clearly find value in paying for products like Google Workspace. This also helps us narrow our field of view and hone in on the type of customer we want. Here's an example of what I'm thinking my ideal customer is:
With this focus, it's easier to identify customers, and even find partners (such as resellers), who also target these customers.
So yeah, we're giving it away for free to most of the world, because they'll find value in what we provide, and in turn I'm confident we will reap rewards.

Love the idea for this, I hate having to sign documents on a PDF! This rocks!
Thanks so much! I'd love to hear how your experience goes.
Very interesting idea, i love that. Congrats.
Thank you so much!
Interesting idea!
Whats to stop one of your competitors (DocuSign, HelloSign) building this feature if it takes off?
Valid question. Big entrenched companies can—in theory—make anything they want, but they are terrible at acting nimbly and chasing after startups. There's a very good reason that startups continue to out run big companies.
I'm a big fan of the freemium model. And your plan is basically not limited by anything except the professional email—great value. This will definitely give you easy exposure from the free users.
Just keep in mind that with such a free plan, I wouldn't expect conversions from free users. But if I value your product correctly, free users don't cost you too many resources.
As for the product itself, very useful, cool tool. Love the idea.
One simple thing, and only based on the video, I would add an option to adjust the signature size when adding to the document. It looks a bit out of place.
With your permission, I'll add Please Sign Me to my free tools directory.
Best of luck
Thanks so much :) I appreciate the thoughtful feedback. We're reworking the entire signer UI right now and I'll make sure we address outsized signatures too!
You can add us to any directory you wish :)
Really interesting, will try it out and let you know.
I appreciate you, thank you :)
Good product. Let me test-drive it for longer, to switch from Docusign!
I'd love to hear your feedback. Switching a customer from DocuSign would be a major win!
The major roadblock to switching is the pricing and ease of use with Docusign. Its so easy to use.
I don't follow, DocuSign pricing is better?
We use just the free plan since our signing frequency is kinda minimal.
Their free plan offers 3 sends total. Do you just make a new free account whenever you need more than that?
Our agency signs up new clients once in a while and in most cases, clients pay for the tools. We just add it to the required list of tools.
