Why I Still Prefer Old-School Rim Locks Over Modern Alternatives

Just finished locking up the workshop with a new rim lock, and it reminded me why I'm such a fan of traditional hardware.

There's something satisfying about a purely mechanical lock. No batteries to replace, no apps to update, and no electronics to fail. You turn the key, hear a solid click, and know everything is working exactly as it should.

I picked a brass rim lock with an iron finish, mostly because I liked the classic look. What surprised me was the feel of it. It's solid, has a reassuring weight, and the mechanism operates smoothly. It's one of those small details that you interact with every day but rarely appreciate until you upgrade.

Working on DIY and renovation projects has taught me that the little things often have the biggest impact. We spend a lot of time choosing paint colours and furniture, but hardware like locks, hinges, and handles can completely change how a space feels and functions.

I've also found that traditional designs tend to age better. Instead of looking outdated after a few years, they develop character and fit into both modern and period-style properties.

For my workshop, a rim lock felt like the perfect choice. It's practical, durable, easy to maintain, and has that old-school craftsmanship that's becoming harder to find.
