Why I stopped paying $200–$400/mo for AI visibility tools and built my own

I’ve been trying a lot of AI visibility / optimization tools over the last year, and most of them had the same issues:

• $200–$400/month pricing
• Black-box prompts and logic
• No control over data or API usage
• You keep paying even if usage is low

I didn’t want to build another SaaS, so I built a self-hosted AI Visibility Toolkit instead.

It runs on your own server (Docker), uses your own API keys, and gives full control over prompts, data, and costs. Pricing is one-time, not subscription-based.

It’s mainly for founders, indie hackers, and small agencies who prefer ownership over convenience.

I actually started this as a monthly SaaS.

While using it myself, it felt weird charging a subscription for something I wanted to run with my own data and API keys. So I dropped the SaaS idea and rebuilt it as a self-hosted, one-time purchase instead.

Curious how others here think about self-hosted vs SaaS for AI tools.
