Why most AI voice chats fail at real conversation

Most AI voice chats feel polite but useless.

They wait for you to finish. They respond calmly. They never push back.
That’s fine for demos, but terrible for real conversations.

In human dialogue, interruptions are not a bug. They’re how we clarify, correct, and keep momentum.
Think interviews, tutoring, sales calls, or even brainstorming. If one side never interrupts, the conversation dies.

Current voice AIs are optimized to not interrupt, because it’s safer.
The result is something that listens forever and helps very little.

I’m curious how others here think about this:

  • Should AI ever interrupt a user?

  • If yes, when is it helpful vs annoying?

  • Are we over-optimizing for politeness instead of usefulness?

Would love to hear real use cases where an interrupting AI would actually be better than a “nice” one.
