Why pasting a contract into chat isn’t the same as a tool built for that job.

One question I keep getting:

"Why wouldn't I just paste the contract into Grok/ChatGPT and ask for the risks?"

Fair question. I've done that too.

It's also not the same job as a product built specifically for contracts and terms.

Here's the difference I've landed on while building TermsGuard:

  1. General chat is flexible. A specialized tool is focused.
Chat can summarize, rewrite, brainstorm — anything.
A purpose-built flow is narrower on purpose:
    upload → plain-English summary → risk flags → Q&A on that document → export.

  2. Prompt quality varies. Product output shouldn't.
In chat, "summarize this" and "find auto-renewal, data ownership, and liability limits" get very different results.
A product can encode those checks so you don't have to write the perfect prompt every time.

  3. A chat reply is temporary. Decision support needs a record.
Threads scroll away. When you're reviewing a freelance agreement, lease, or service contract, you often need something you can revisit — not just a one-off answer in a tab you'll close.

  4. "Accurate" isn't always "useful."
"They may share data with partners" is correct.
"Here's what that means for control of your work/data before you agree" is closer to decision support.

  5. Both use AI. Only one is built around the signing decision.
General AI is a powerful assistant.
A specialized tool helps in a constrained moment: limited attention, incomplete legal knowledge, pressure to click through.

When chat is enough:
• casual curiosity
• you already know what to ask
• you don't need structure or a saved view

When a specialized tool is more useful:
• lease, freelance contract, NDA, service agreement
• you want consistent risk flags
• you need follow-up on that document
• the question is "what should I notice before I agree?"

I'm not arguing that general AI is weak.
I'm arguing that "AI can read this" and "this product is designed for the decision" are different.

Curious how others think about this:
When you build vertical AI tools, how do you answer "why not just use ChatGPT?"

Same question I get. Chat is fine when you already know what to ask. It is not the same job when you have a lease, freelance MSA, or vendor terms in front of you this week and you need the same flags every time.

    I shipped a $9 check for that moment — 3 runs, no account: https://skim.forgeprod.com

Fixed pass, not a new prompt each time. Not a lawyer.
