When building a product, especially as a solo founder or small startup, it’s tempting to focus on features. More buttons, more options, more “cool” stuff. But here’s the hard truth: features don’t matter if users can’t use them.
A clean, intuitive UI does three things that actually drive growth:
Reduces friction
Users should be able to get what they need without thinking twice. Every extra step, confusing label, or hidden menu increases churn. Simplicity = retention.
Builds trust
When your interface feels polished and predictable, users subconsciously trust your product more. Clunky interfaces scream “unfinished” or “unreliable.”
Speeds up adoption
The easier it is to understand your product, the faster people can get value. And value is what makes them stick, share, and pay.
A simple, user-friendly design doesn’t just look nice — it’s a growth engine. As indie hackers, we often underestimate the impact of micro-decisions in UI: font size, spacing, button placement. These small choices compound into a better user experience and, ultimately, higher retention.
Bottom line: Stop overcomplicating. Focus on clarity, ease, and flow. Features are important, but only after your users can actually use them.
You can check out my latest project, AI Cooking Assistant and would love to hear your thought on the ui design too. IOS app is coming soon too.
