Why we are using Substack and not Revue for our newsletter?

We narrowed it down to Revue and Substack for [The Big Bang Launch Newsletter] (https://thebigbanglaunch.substack.com/) after looking through all the platforms.

We then had to pick one of them. But choosing one among them is difficult as both are almost the same.

So, we created a publication and tested both platforms.

Before going into the reasons why we've chosen Substack, we’ve considered these 6 factors to choose the best platform.

  1. Setting up the account & publication
  2. Email Editor
  3. Deliverability
  4. Integrations
  5. Scalability and
  6. Pricing

1. Setting up the account & publication

Although setting up an account on both platforms is pretty much similar, creating a publication is significantly different.

Creating a publication on Revue is quite similar to creating a YouTube channel or Facebook page.

However, there is a slight learning curve involved with creating a publication on Substack.

Writing a Welcome email, and designing the profile page is just a cakewalk on Revue, on Substack, it’s not the case. Due to the multiple publications and more features, Substack can be a little overwhelming in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, you will love Substack publication settings.

On Revue, creating a welcome email and a profile page is a piece of cake, but not so on Substack. Substack can be a little overwhelming at first due to the multiple publications and other features, but once you get the hang of it, you will love the publication settings.

2. Email Editor

Substack's newsletter editor is the same as Google Docs. Writing, Editing and Formatting the content is so effortless.

Whereas Revue’s editor is a drag-and-drop editor. You need to drag the elements when you want to write/add something.

In addition to offering plenty of formatting options, the Substack editor also includes features like subscriber forms and promo codes. Unlike Revue, which has few formatting possibilities.

3. Deliverability

Deliverability, which affects your open and clickthrough rates, is one of the most important considerations when selecting a newsletter.

So, we’ve checked by subscribing to both newsletters using multiple emails.

While Revue was delivered to the Promotion & Spam mailbox, Substack's welcome email was delivered to the Promotion/Inbox folder.

4. Integrations

Substack outweighs Revue on almost every other feature, but Substack falls far behind in terms of integrations.

The true X-factor of Revue is it’s Integrations. Revue has a ton of powerful integrations like Twitter, WordPress, Zapier, and Stripe. However, Substack has only Stripe integration.

5.Growth:

The best part about substack is it recommends your publications on the Substack feed which will bring you, additional subscribers. Also, Substack allows you to create multiple publications and cross-promote each other.

Additionally, Substack offers a podcast capability if you wish to start a podcast.

I haven’t seen these features on Revue.

6. Pricing:

Though both platforms are free, they charge when you make money.

Revue takes 5% off your earnings, whereas Substack takes 10% of your earnings. And also, a custom domain is free with Revue where you need to pay $50 for a custom domain on substack

Reasons Why We Use Choose Substack Over Revue:

  1. We want a seamless editor with more formatting options and CTA features like Forms and Promo Codes.
  2. Substack's Deliverability is superior to Revue's.
  3. Also, as The Big Bang Launch newsletter is interview-based, Substack will make it simple for us to publish podcasts in the future.
  4. The Substack recommendation tool will be the cherry on top of all of these other benefits.
  5. Despite integrations being a downside of substack, given its Pros over Revue, we couldn't do much about it.

That’s it, These are the reasons why we’ve chosen Substack for The Big Bang Launch newsletter.
