As a founder, I was stuck. Like most of us, I tried to do the "smart" thing and buy a solution off the shelf. But after months of frustration with a bloated, expensive CRM that didn't fit our business, I made a radical choice: I decided to build my own from scratch.
This is the first post in a series where I'll document my "build in public" journey of creating a custom CRM for my company using AI. This isn't just about a tool; it's about proving that a new approach to development can solve real business problems without a massive budget or a six-month timeline.
The Problem with the Status Quo
We’ve all been there. You pay for a SaaS product that promises to solve all your problems, but it just adds more friction. We were spending more time trying to force a generic CRM to meet our specific needs than actually talking to customers. The core issues were:
Missing Features: Our workflow was unique, and the off-the-shelf tools lacked crucial functionalities.
Bloated Interfaces: We were overwhelmed by features we would never use, making the tool slow and confusing.
High Costs: We were paying a premium for a tool that didn't fit our needs.
The most effective content for this community is transparent, value-driven, and focused on problem-solving. I realized I needed a solution that was perfectly suited to our team, and the only way to get it was to build it ourselves.
The Case for a Custom Solution
The conventional wisdom is that building a custom CRM is a huge project—a resource-intensive, multi-month undertaking that most bootstrapped startups can't afford. But what if that rule is outdated?
I believe that recent advancements in generative AI have made it possible for a small team—or even a solo founder—to build a sophisticated, custom tool. This approach prioritizes speed and functionality over a bloated feature set, allowing for a
lean, actionable guide to building a solution that truly works. My goal is to use this journey as a compelling case study and a direct customer acquisition funnel for our own services.
What's Next in the Journey
In the next episode, I'll take you behind the scenes and show you the very first steps of the build. We'll start with the initial "conversations" with the AI and see the first pieces of our new CRM come to life. Stay tuned to see if this radical idea actually works.
