Why Website Migration Is Still Hard in 2026

After spending 14 years building websites for clients, I've noticed that creating a website is usually not the hardest part.

Moving it is.

Businesses change platforms all the time. They start on Wix, Webflow, custom HTML, or now one of the many AI website builders. Later they want more flexibility, ownership, or access to a different ecosystem.

The problem is that migration often means rebuilding everything from scratch.

What's interesting is that AI has made website creation dramatically faster, but it has also created a new challenge: portability. More websites are being generated than ever before, but moving them between platforms is still surprisingly difficult.

This is a problem I've been thinking about a lot lately while building PressMeGPT.

I'm curious how others see this.

As AI website builders become more popular, do you think website portability and ownership will become more important, or will most users stay within the platform where they originally built their site?
