Why you should know the real names of your top 5 target customers

“He wrote a book for just two of his friends. (Tim Ferriss) didn't design his book to achieve an abstract goal or appeal to an abstract audience. He got real. When you get real, you deal with the real problem you're trying to solve, rather than dwelling on your ideas about the problem. ”- Mike Maples Jr

Lose the theoretical customer personas and focus on real, specific individuals.

The better you understand the nuanced needs and complex pains of your persona, the more value you can provide.

So make a list of just the 1-5 of the best targets in the world, study them, make the best possible user experience just for them.

Take it to the next level by printing out photos of your targets and pinning them up on your desk.

Hope this helps you stay focused on PMF today :)

The idea of printing out photos of these targets and keeping them visible is a brilliant reminder to stay connected to the human element behind our work. Thanks for sharing.

This is very poignant - and indeed ancient - advice!

When Seneca, the Roman Stoic philosopher, wrote to one of his students, he told him to etch onto his mind an example of a great man when trying to become one. Paul the Apostle instructed the early Christians to use himself as a living example for how best to embody the faith.

The same can be true of the people we're trying to serve in business. If we imagine our customers abstractly, it's hard to serve them best, but we can always serve well someone we know well!
