Over the last couple of years, no code has begun to take a foot hold on the software development world.
Tools like: Glide, bubble, adalo, Weebly, webflow etc. have started to gain traction more than ever.
This recent development has led developers (especially web developers) into panic as they feel their job is at risk.
Seeing companies like Google and Amazon launch no code platforms is even scarier.
IS YOUR JOB AT RISK?
There’s a billion and one way to answer this but to keep the answer short and precise most likely, this of course depends on your area of specialty.
Website developers :
High risk. The ease of creating a website should really get website developers worried. WordPress, Weebly, webflow etc. are absolutely amazing and i honestly doubt web developers can compete.
Mobile app, web app developers:
Medium risk. Tools are surfacing quick and for each release it becomes easier and cheaper. App developers will need to diversify and also get ready to learn even way deeper as only the best will get gigs or jobs.
Full stack and AI developers:
Low risk. Full stack and AI developers are of the lowest risk thinkable as companies will absolutely need them to build and modify the no code builders but just like the app developers only the top 3% will get hired
ARE YOU A NO CODE ENTHUASIST?
After over 6 months of studying a whole lot of no code tools and using YouTube as my tutor. I have seen some blatant B.s and some extremely helpful content.
Just to reduce the friction needed to get into the no code community i have built MicroCode ( built with no code).
MicroCode gathers the best tutorials from Video to article to Audio and put’s it on it’s platform.
All resources are free, We are also always ready to help if you have any issue with any tutorial or want a request.
Examples of contents on the site:
Amazon clone with no code
Facebook clone with no code
Workout app with no code
Product hunt clone with no code
Instagram Clone with no code and lot’s more
Thanks for the cleer thinking!
I have strong belief in nocode tools, which tend to commoditise and make it simple to deliver certain types of digital products ie landing pages, moving to e-commerce, moving to mobile apps.
However, organisations will continue to see opportunity in differentiation. That’s where developers can get results - how do you make your landing page or mobile app better than the commodity item?
Exactly
As you said it largely depends on the devs speciality.
What's unclear is when the rest of the tooling will catch up. Things like version control, collaboration, etc for nocode are a long way from supporting enterprise projects which is where the serious money is. It will eventually happen but could take a decade or more to impact enterprise developers.
Was just listening to a Podcast from the Unqork CEO. He says their goal is to be the last man standing in Enterprise IT in 10 years time 😳
Over the coming decades developers at least junior ones will find it hard to get jobs, it might have an impact on the freelance world too though
Freelancers might still get work if they've specialised.
When you need advanced custom code in your Bubble project it will probably make sense to hire someone for a month.
Do I think no code will replace developers?
I think the number of developers will drop, but no code will not replace devs.
As a full Stack developer I am quite excited about the direction no code is taking, I see many advantages but it's not a 'one size fits all' solution and devs will still be required somewhere along the line to help with more customized work.
I think low code is a happy medium, and I fully expect to see AI playing a huge role in the future.
The only people who should be concerned are those who are not willing to adapt and embrace the change.
