Will Zoom Apps be the next hot startup platform?

  1. 4

I think it really depends on how much they push Zoom Apps to their userbase.

Shopify has done an amazing job with this and now we see plenty of successful Shopify Apps making 5-figures+ MRR.

You've hit the nail on the head.
If they take on the shopify model it will make it harder for people to shift to video conference alternatives.

  2. 3

On a related note does anyone consider the Microsoft 365 platform as something worth exploring? Specifically MS Teams.

MS doesn't get a lot of love from the saas/indie hacker world but it has 115 million daily users.

These platforms are huge. Think of some of the use-cases you have been looking for.

    • Taking attendance for school
    • Dice Rolling for Online Games
    • Games, literally almost any game that people play over zoom, could be a plugin. Like that game with the word on your forehead?

Even if the pandemic lasts a year, I think there will be some lingering effects. Like Zoom is not going away. More offices are being remote, and people can hang out with their friends/family from far away.

Full article is paid, but you get the idea.

Is anyone planning on exploring ideas for Zoom Apps as a product idea?

    1. 3

Our team has been building Circles for Zoom which is built on top of Zoom and turns each participant into a circle on your screen to get Zoom out of your way so you can take notes, multi-task, and get your desktop back.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

I tried an app named Around with more or less the same idea. But your app is awesome, because it works on top of Zoom.

        Wishing you luck!

Love the idea behind Circles and have wanted to try it since launch, but is there any way to make it accessible to people who are on OSX 10.13.x ?
A good portion of people I know, including myself can't update to a more recent OSX release due to the lack of legacy apps support.

      I've been considering it.

  5. 1

Honestly with competitions like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Amazon Chime I wouldn't bet on Zoom.

  6. 1

Hmm, interesting train of thoughts! Might be a bit to late though with the covid vaccines almost rolled out.

    1. 1

Might be wrong but the demand might still be higher than the pre COVID era with all the companies choosing to stay remote and some people relocating to country side!

      1. 1

Ah yes, I see your point. Companies have learned how to work remote and still be productive.

I was just thinking about this article. This weekend we have to sing happy birthday via Zoom. Might be cool if Zoom somehow was able to combine karaoke with video conference.

        I smell the potential! 😅
