Wordpress Design: Figure it out or outsource?

Spending a $150 on a beautiful theme to save you dozens of hours is worth it. If you have your own design skills, then you could probably do it, but ask yourself how much time you could save by buying a pre-made theme.

I largely second everyone who recommended buying an existing theme. You'll save a lot of money by going this route. Unless you have a big budget and a clear direction, you'll probably also save a good amount of time too. Also, lower cost professionals will likely just be using a pre-purchased theme anyhow.

At a very early stage in a project, the only reason I would suggest getting a professional is if you have a very unique set of requirements that are critical to your project. In that case, it could be tough getting an off-the-shelf tool to work and could end up taking more time. Even then, there's a huge variety of themes, so it is unlikely you won't be able to find something to meet your needs.

There are so many free templates that you can adjust to your needs in an easy and convenient way. The advantage of doing it yourself is, first you learn a new skill and second you can change things yourself when urgently needed and don´t have to wait for a company that might need a few days to do it.
