For those that have experimented with working publicly, how have you gone about it? I've seen people tweet their weekly updates, I've seen people do daily standup here. And that all seem fine, but seem to be missing something for me. If the goal is accountability, have you found any other processes or tools to accomplish that.
I feel like it's all about the right head space. I usually slack off pretty hard at home, just because my head is so used to watching youtube videos and playing guitar here.
Once i'm in the right place and my brain is actually wired to work (libarary and cafes), i can work seemlessly even on self accountability. Also don't bring headphones so you can't slack off watching youtube videos (which is very quick spiral)
My buddy @jwd2a and I hold weekly office hours (a la YC office hours) where we both discuss our respective startups. We had a small lull earlier this year, and I tell ya, my productivity dipped during that time as I didn't have the level of accountability that I had grown accustomed to.
Personally, I don't think there's any apps or platforms out there that can replace looking somebody in the eyes and taking you your shit stinks or you're working on the wrong stuff.
If you're friends with anybody else that a side hustler, you should see if they'd be up for doing a weekly video chat or something in person where you can discuss things and bounce ideas.
Our agenda is fairly loose, generally speaking it's just "what'd you do last week to move the needle" and "what are you planning to do this week to move the needle".
I like your question "what'd you do last week to move the needle". I think that is the essence of what I am missing. I am productive each day and check things off my list and do my daily habits. Though reframing things to 'is this going to move the needle" seems to be the key. Thanks for the thoughts @joshtronic! :)
Not a problem... even if you can't get an accountability group / partner going, you could always setup a slack bot (assuming you have a slack team for your side hustle) and have it ask you that question every day.
We also do that (in addition to a weekly call), doing a monday check-in to see what's on the docket for the week, then a wednesday check-in to see if we're on track, and then a friday one to see if things went according to plan, how they could have been better, and then a question about current morale
