Worth It Finance - Origin Story

Hello Fellow Indie Hackers!

As my cofounders and I work through the product development of the 'Worth It' app (https://worthit.app), we recently reflected back to the roots of where the idea came from. Thought it would be a good share with the IH community. So for some quick background, 'Worth It' is a financial awareness app designed to help identify and promote changes in user's spending habits. To us, it's about not only identifying where your money went, but taking a moment of self-reflection to decide if you spent your money (and time) well. It's about adopting the 'Worth It Mentality' and going out into daily life with that at the forefront of your mind.

The initial concept for the 'Worth it Mentality' came from our founder, Tyler, after an experience he had with a budgeting app he had been using. His brother was in town for a night, getting a much needed break from his grueling med school schedule. He reached out to Tyler to see if he wanted to grab dinner somewhere. They met up and spent several hours eating, drinking, and catching up. The food was great, the drinks were strong, and the conversation would have continued indefinitely, had it not gotten so late. After Tyler paid his bill and was leaving, he got a notification from the budgeting app that he had gone over his monthly budget for 'restaurants'. This made him think back to previous meals he had eaten out that month. Most of those were attributable to lunches during the work week with random co-workers, usually at underwhelming establishments. In Tyler's mind there was no doubt that the meal he had just shared with his brother was 100% worth it and he would do it again in a heartbeat, should the opportunity arise. Those other work week meals, however, are what Tyler focused in on.

After sharing this experience with us, we developed a means for tracking our transactions in a unique way. One that would require a bit of honesty and self-awareness on our parts. It was amazing to see the amount of frivolous expenditures each of us made. Once we began identifying these bad spending habits we were able to take action and start to avoid falling into old behaviors. The result was a significant increase in our own abilities to save money, as well as making more informed decisions up-front about whether we thought a meal, retail purchase, or experience was going to be worth our time and/or money.

So, to you I say, welcome to the Worth It Mentality! Feel free to scope out our landing page, which I linked in the opening paragraph. I always like a good origin story, so after it came up in our recent founders meeting I thought I would share ours. Hope you enjoyed.
