Would it be a game changer if logging in to websites was as easy as this?

Is anyone already offering this way to login to websites without needing to type your email, username, password or any other information? Would you use it?

  1. download a free authenticator app to you mobile and register an account with your email

  2. on your desktop/laptop go to the login page of any website you wish to login to (you have already signed up previously)

  3. the website displays a unique QR code. you do not have to type your email, username, password or any other information

  4. scan the QR code with your authenticator app. scan your fingerprint/eye for additional security

  5. you are immediately logged in to the website on your laptop

  6. fyi,... if you were logging in to the website on your mobile rather than a laptop, then you would simply click/hold the QR code image and then "share..." to the authenticator app

And the start-up Myki as well

Look at the startup Fast, the authentification process is really simple and smooth. I think there is enough place for more competitors

What is their website so i can check?

  3. 2

hmmm I feel like the login method you describe would take even more time than the regular email + username combination...

    1. 1

      I timed it...

      • type in my email and my ‘easy to remember’ password, then click Login - 10 seconds

      • open camera app and scan qr code which auto-opens my app; i then do fingerprint scan; then website auto logs in - 10 seconds

    1. go to the login page of any website you wish to login to
    2. click "sign in with Google"
    3. wait two seconds, click the profile you want to use
    4. you are immediately logged in

    or

    1. go to the login page of any website you wish to login to
    2. you use a password manager, one click and both email/username and password fields are filled
    3. submit the login form
    4. you are immediately logged in

aren't there any other indie hackers who'd prefer to find solutions that don't involve google ;-(

I don't like how google-dependent we all are and how much data they collect, but sadly that's the reality we live in.
I think email/username + password auth is still faster (and less confusing) than the method you described. It is safer and faster only in one scenario - if you often login on devices you don't own/use regularly.

        1. 1

"sadly that's the reality we live in". hhmmm?

If you slice open a true indie hacker, down the middle is written "improve the world by changing the reality we live in".

Sadly that doesn't seem to be holding true on this post ;-(

"find solutions that don't involve google"

Google/Apple are involved in your app.

There's lots of "login with Google", "login with Facebook", or "login with SSO" type approaches, which are both "username and passwordless" (for the site you're visiting) and faster to login than using an authenticator app on your phone.

@moniquesexperiments yeah fair point ;-) but I just did a simulated experiment and they take the same time, assuming you remember your password. But this is the problem, we all forget password especially if we properly use long/difficult ones.

My idea does not need you to type or remember anything. So far i cannot find anything like it.

Thanks @fleufleu92, but neither of these do what i propose. My idea for login is password-less and username-less. I cannot find anyone else who does this.

    1. 2

      Hi Steve! https://magic.link/ provides a passwordless, username-less login. 🤓

      1. 2

Hey nice find. But it requires you to type in your email address. My idea requires no typing at all!!

        1. 2

OH! Sorry, I didn't catch that part. Ooh...really cool!

It reminds me of Adobe's Account Access app - it makes it easier for users to access the variety of apps Adobe offers in the App store.

I do have to say that it feels like a disconnected experience. I'd have to leave Adobe "X" app to get an auth code from Account Access, and then go back to Adobe X.

But since your app is only for desktop websites, and I wouldn't need to copy & paste any code, I imagine the experience would be WAY better!

I think the biggest challenge is how you would keep the app as secure as possible...we wouldn't want anyone to be able to easily access this app!

          1. 2

yes the encryption and security under the bonnet definitely needs a lot of thinking ;-) I guess Magic have done a lot of this already.

Some sites already have this and I use the Google Authenticator app to login. It's definitely a very useful tool but I do prefer it as a periodic check (every two weeks/once a month depending on the site) as opposed to using it all the time and stay logged in otherwise. I don't always have my phone on me (shocking, I know 😊)

    1. 1

thanks @ksp, can you show me an example website that does this exactly as my idea?

      1. 2

Logging into google, for example. I can login using the authenticator app. Of course, I need to have logged in once with my credentials and saved my login info. On subsequent visits it saves from entering that info again, just a 6-digit code from the authenticator app.

        1. 2

what a horrible experience that sounds...typing numbers. we don't need any typing to login.

with my idea,... scan a qr code with your phone, confirm with fingerprint and you are logged in. simples!! no typing ;-)

          1. 2

well, maybe you are onto something here.

            ALl the best!
