Would you become a customer of your own start-up?

Hi Makers! 🐝

I know that the title sounds strange.
Probably you are working on something currently, for sure you like the idea of your project too, in other way you wouldn't work on it, right? Or maybe you are on the way to create your own first start-up? 🀠
.
.

But

.
.
Honestly, would you become your own customer? If you see your own project with different eyes, would the content on your website convince you? Would the way you advertise your product make you "potential" buyer? πŸ€“

Its can become even more weird if I ask you - Why wouldn't you become your own customer. AWKWARD I know. πŸ₯΄

I can imagine its not an easy question, because you can't be totally objective however if you think a little bit different than a "creator" but more as a "user" of the service that you provide I am sure you will have some interesting thoughts!

I made one REFLECTION like this today, that's also why I am writing about it cause I love to share some of my abstract ways of thinking ( Don't worry about me but I can have a lot of them ). It helped me to understand what was missing in my start-up, in other words - it opened my mind like if I was eating πŸ„. JOKE.

Let me tell you something, the start-up I am working on is connected with real estates, however its not another real estate company. I believe that we provide a great tool for home seekers but for now we don't have a lot of users. We have a speed of turtle. 🐒 Yep you read it good. But thats okay, we launched it around 2 weeks ago. What I figure out is the way I was introducing the idea wasn't efficient because "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still"
You know what I mean?

Have those words in mind and put yourself in the skin of a user you are trying to get!

Sending you lots of positive energy! 🌻

    Yes, this is so important!

I actually built Prism because I wanted it (I know, selfish right?!), but even after it was built, I knew that believing I wanted it and actually using it and finding it useful are two very different things. And if you don't find yourself using your own product and finding it useful, then who else will? I'm constantly revisiting that concept in my own mind. There are days when I think ugh, will anyone really use this? I can easily pick apart the flaws and question the weaknesses in the idea. And then there are days where I find it super useful and it does exactly what I wanted it to do, and I get excited again and want to share it and keep pushing it forward, despite all the work there is to do.

      Hey @annawestern 😊
Totally understand it! I made my project because I wanted this to exist! Sounds funny πŸ˜…I found my idea when I was searching an apartment for rent with my boyfriend and I wished to have a tool where I could list all properties I liked so I didnt have to fight with Excel or google spreadsheets, etc.. So I thought about tool where it takes the price, address and the landlord phone number. Of course I have my apartment already so I dont have to use it but I created this not for me at the end! I am sure people are struggeling with this sometimes! Keep going and dont doubt your idea! But I totally understand your way of thinking! I have sometimes the same days like you! " will anyone really use this?" Well we will see πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    hey this one is great!

My partner and I founded Pubb.at. and we actually use it as a place where we store our data and occasion discussion.

The only thing that holds me back is it's not an app yet. But that will change in the future

    Hey there Karolina!

Interesting post and thoughts! Probably not so relevant for me since my startup is a coworking space, but honestly it made me think for a second.

But the answer is a definitive yes.

Not to self promote or anything of the sort, but I actually probably would not go to any other coworking spaces in the city if I heard of mine. It may sound self absorbed but, I’m trying my best on every front in terms of what a coworking space has to offer. I won’t compete with coffee shops if things like that, it’s a different vibe, but if you want to get work done and be comfortable I really do hope I’m offering the best there is.

And also, I’m basically a cost-leader in my market.

Now, aside from this of course there is room for improvement and I want to make the space better all the time too!

The only thing that’s remaining is to cross my fingers and hope it works :)

    Cheers, and all the best!

    David

Great point. You should always judge your landing page and product with the mindset of "would I like this as a customer?" - especially in the early days.
