I am thinking of launching a new productized service to help fellow makers with UX.
Pay 50€ and receive a 10mins video of me testing your product, giving honest feedback and providing practical UX tips and improvements.
For example you could get feedback on:
Here is a 2mins example of a free video I did for a friend https://www.loom.com/share/4683d89add444488a13bc8afb69b84de
What do you think? I am curious to hear your thoughts!
This is a good "top of the funnel" service that lets you show your value and sign up some clients for longer-term consulting engagements.
This is a fairly inexpensive way for a startup to pay a small fee for some quick, first-impression advice from a credible source. For you, the asynch nature of the service makes it easy to work around your existing job/clients.
I think this is a nice replacement for the traditional "intro meeting free" that consultants usually do. Charge something so you qualify the prospect, make it asynch so it's not a drain on your schedule, and if you can provide valuable advice then you're setting up a longer consulting engagement when the startup can afford it.
It also builds up your list for courses, e-books, newsletters, and whatever else you're doing.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Jesse!
This is exactly what I had in my mind
I'll probably launch in the next 2 weeks and see how it goes. It's an interesting easy-to-manage productized service that creates lots of value for solo founders on a budget as well :)
Hey Jim, I think I would pay for this. When I read the title, I thought you were talking about a generic video targeted to a non-specific audience, but getting a customized video for the product I want makes total sense and it's really valuable.
What I would suggest, is to emphasize the fact that you're an industry expert and have the experience. To be honest, I don't think I got that feeling from watching the example video.
I could get the same type of advice from a friend. Your value proposition is that you have the authority and know what you're talking about, that's what you need to convince me of first before I give you my money.
Yeap great point and thanks a lot for sharing! I'll make sure the video will be well-structured and professional enough :-)

Yeap exactly
The quick answer is that people ARE paying for this productized service. I used to offer it as part of an introductory service to larger SaaS enterprise projects. I've let the SSL expire, so don't be scared if you're warned about accessing the page, but go ahead and check it out on how I've positioned it and season it to taste: http://userx.io/the-ux-audit/.
That's really cool thanks a lot for sharing! Your audit is more in-depth in terms of insights and research compared to what I have in mind which is a great sign that there are customers out there with a budget to pay this kind of services. :-)
Good luck, Jim!
Thank you!
I wouldn't pay 50€ for a 2 minute video like that.
IMO, the feedback was a bit generic. Basically you told him to add a search field to the company list page. I could've provided the same info, if not more.
A better deliverable from an expert in UX would have been a quick wireframe or mock-up that showed a search field, how the search would be performed, how the user would select the companies, and how that would look/function.
2 minutes != 50€ ($60 USD)
Though, if you can get a list of satisfied customers providing 2 minute videos for that amount, let me be your partner :) I'll do that kinda work all day long!
I would be interested.
Hey Timothy! Do you have something specific in mind in terms of what you want feedback on (product link and user flows)?
P.S. Not trying to sell - just trying to get more insights on what you need help with in terms of feedback
I have an ecard site. So I will need feedback on 1) card sending/sharing process, 2) the process regarding adding contacts when sending and 3) functionalities regarding address book and address groups.
I think you could build a general video going through practical UX tips and improvements from a bunch of different projects and sell that for 50€.
While doing a fortune with that you can do per project consulting at a much higher rate from the requests you'll receive as a byproduct of the general video.
Once you get rich please remember of this comment and buy me a beer.
Haha thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts man!
What you described will be a future product I have in mind :) I am creating the last 5 months a UX course that I want to launch until the end of the year.
It's a complete course on UX for indiehackers and solo makers. It's not about how to design a button or how to make your UI look pretty but how to make a product that is actually easy to use.
The way I collect insights and examples is by working with other people through freelancing, coaching and these 10mins videos. This way I have many real-life examples I can show and explain and make the course truly practical for others. :)
Hey Jim! I think I would pay for this. A quick review from a UX expert that can quickly detect low-hanging fruits to improve the UX of my product would be helpful. I'm sure my product (which is still not a v1 yet) has lots of 'UX facepalms moments', but it's hard to notice them being in the trenches. I would also pay for the same concept but to receive feedback from the copy.
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts Federico!
What you described is exactly what I have in mind :-) Do you have any specific flows / scenarios you would like to test at the moment for tiny mentions? (Just curious to get more insights, not trying to sell haha)
Awesome! I would be particularly interested in the 'moment 0', that is, right after when the user signs up and needs to do the 'big' action in TinyMentions; creating a new monitor to start tracking tweets. In other words, I'm interested in the first minutes of their experience with the product and how I can improve it.
Got it! Just sent you an email to discuss further :)
I think you're selling yourself short. Yeah it's cheap, but how much value could that really bring? I know that UX designers are particularly data-driven and it would be much more impactful to the saas founder to get optimization suggestions that has a high chance of making a meaningful impact over just 10 minutes of random commentary.
You have 8 years of experience man! I would much rather to pay $300 for you to give me actionable insights (that aren't too time intensive for you to produce) over $50 for commentary.
In the end, you could easily end up with dozens/hundreds of success stories due to much stronger and deeper suggestions.
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts Romaine!
I totally see your point and agree :-)
This service is focused on helping fellow indiehackers and designers that want to get some feedback on something they created without investing a big amount of money. Sometimes you just need a designer and ask them what they think.
What I am going to do is to actually user test a flow (act as a user and describe my thoughts while I use your product) and then I will come up with some design ideas on how to fix the issues I spotted.
It's intended to be used as an introductory service to the other two UX services I offer at the moment:
