Would you pay for Public Speaking Confidence coaching?

I lead communications at a tech company in Boston (over 10 years working in marketing and comms at other startup/tech companies as well) and on weekends I've been heads down developing a public speaking coaching program that is focused on confidence. Is this something that interests people (especially in a time of digital meetings)? My program is focused on ridding anxieties around public speaking and growing confidence, but are there other areas of public speaking you would focus on?

In the book - Talking to Humans, Giff Constable highlights a very important rule of thumb on assessing users potential to pay for a future service/product. He says, the question should always be 'When was the last time you actually paid for a service/product/course relating to X? This is because humans are terrible at foresight and they always make different choices relative to the scenario in the future. [ For eg. Post-poning / dropping the idea or purchase , etc ]

It's really hard for anyone to accurately predict what they will and won't pay for. So even if you ask a bunch of people, "Would you buy X?" you might get lots of no's from people who would actually use it and (more commonly) lots of yesses from people who actually wouldn't. There's a great book called The Mom Test that might be helpful here. If you search for it on IH, there are lots of useful discussions that say more than I have here: https://www.indiehackers.com/search?q=the mom test

All that said, I think I'd pay for something to help with this? But not because I plan on doing lots of public speaking. More because I'd be curious to see if there are some general valuable lessons to learn here. I guess I'd be exceptionally more likely to pay if there was an actual human coach involved, and very unlikely to pay if not.

That's great to know! Thank you for your feedback. I have built out a private coaching model (publicspeakingmethods.com) so it's good to know you see that as an important element.

    That's a good idea.

The area I would be interested in is the art of storytelling.

Followed you on Twitter hope to get some updates on your program

I'll follow you too. I'm also interested in updates.

Semi-related, next week's IH podcast episode has a large focus on storytelling.

        Looking forward to it

Paying service for public speaking exists hence your first question is definitely a BIG YES for me.

However, I don't seem to hear what makes your coaching unique than many professionals out there. I'm sure you're a pro in terms of pitching and communications. Would be nice if you can include more empathy when you're selling yourself or the services instead of work experiences.

    All the best! @PublicSpeakingMethod

Thanks! I help people who are specifically working on overcoming fear. Check out my website and let me know if you think it does a good job of describing this: publicspeakingmethods.com.

I am also hosting a free live coaching session and webinar on April 28. If you're interesting in joining, you can register under the events tab.

      Thanks again for your feedback.

I would be interested in learning the fundamentals, effective tips and techniques. And would pay for practice sessions. (I wouldn't say confidence is the missing piece).

I think it’s good! I found value in a couple ToastMasters meetings and would pay for sessions on technique (not confidence) ahead of, say, presenting at a conference.

I definitely would. I think the topics of confidence and ridding anxieties are key, but I'd also add in how to be more succinct in your delivery, how to get your message across in as short a time as possible (Ted Talk style) so that people don't get bored. How to step out of using PowerPoint slides - or making those slides just images and no words to make them more engaging.

I would be interested in a service like this. I'm aware that these type of coaching services exist, but for me, there's too much uncertainty around them to ever pull the trigger:

    • How much will the coach charge? Lots of these kinds of services have very intransparent pricing. This issue should be easy to solve.

    • How many hours is it going to take to get me to a noticeably improved level? Most of the time, it's going to be thousands of dollars until you can seriously judge how effective the coaching was. This is going to be tough to solve. Maybe believable testimonal videos with before and after could help?

Thanks for your feedback! I am still getting ready to feature videos on my site (publicspeakingmethods.com), but I am super transparent about my pricing. The program is five weeks long and costs $685. It includes weekly private coaching calls with me (via Zoom) and real-time support in speech writing, presentation training and any other needs on behalf of the client as they relate to the program.

Right now, I'm offering free one hour coaching sessions -- not a sales call. Legitimate coaching. My goal is to help people, so I love getting in touch with as many people as possible. Also, getting to coach people over Zoom gives them the chance to meet me before getting my full online presence up and running. Feel free to reach out to me if you want a free coaching session!

Would be it worth putting up a sign up page clearly articulating what participants walk in and walk out with and see what sign ups do you get.

I think anxiety is an important aspect. I think it would be interesting if this would be a live video coaching (could be a group), but in any case something beyond just writing about it. No matter how many books you read about public speaking - if you do not do, fail, do again, fail again - you will not succeed.

That's one of my key mottos. You cannot just learn, you must also act in the real world. I'm thinking about also doing free private 1:1 coaching calls to get to know people.

        :) sign me up

Any time you want to chat or Zoom, let me know! I'm typically open on weekends and in the evenings. I'm thinking it would be interesting if you wanted to come with prepared remarks and I could help give feedback using the elements of the public speaking methods I've put together. I'll let you guide what would be most helpful to you.
