I have built an advertising platform for a friend that allows her to directly sell ads on her website at a fixed price for a period of time she defines (i.e. $250 for 30 days), and does not use CPM, CPA etc. She wanted this so that she could choose who advertises on her website and just charge a flat rate.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the viability on this type of advertising being more widely used?
This type of advertising is usually done in large partnerships. I.e when I worked at Google really huge takeovers of the Youtube front-page in the whole country (Brazil) would be bought in this CPD (Cost Per Day) mode. The amount of advertisers that buy this way is very small. Basically only the really huge brands and who buy only on huge publisher brands.
Take a look at Google Ad Manager, it is free and might save you some time
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and knowledge. That was my initial thought that the number of advertisers who buy this way are very small and therefore leads to a very small market. Though, my friend has already filled 60% of her ad slots, but she works in a very small but affluent industry.
The premise of my idea was to see if there was any viability to use what I built and generalise it to be a wider platform like a self serve advertising platform instead of people using the likes of Google Ad Manager. However, it is now clear that it is not a viable idea.
As an advertiser, you want a good handle on how many people you're reaching so you can assess value for money.
The only way I would use this proposed method personally is if the cost were so low that it didn't really matter - akin to advertising in a newsagent shop window for pennies a week. You don't know how many people saw your ad, but you also don't really care.
It's in the real of "take a punt" advertising, which $250 for 30 days might be for some businesses, depending on her website's demographic.
Makes sense. Thanks for the feedback.
