Write down you password, pretty please with suger on top 🙏

I am working on the welcome sequence for POW! — the privacy-first menstrual cycle journal.

One of the emails in the sequence needs to compel the customer to write down their password (so they do no lose access to their data).

This is my draft and would love some feedback. I am trying to keep it short and actionable, but also informative/educational.

Is it actionable enough?
Does it give enough context?

Yes,

I just asked you to write down your password.
It might sound bonkers, but security experts are with me on this one.
And for a privacy-first app like POW! it is a must!

Let me explain: All your data is end-to-end encrypted for maximum privacy. The data is locked with your password before leaving your device, and it can only be unlocked with your password. If you forget your password, you lose access to your data. There is no way for me to unlock it for you and then lock it again with a new password.

TLDR: Forget your password, lose access to all your data.

So pretty please with sugar on top: write down your password 🙏

  • I recommend using a password manager. My personal favorite is 1Password.
  • Next-best is a notebook for your passwords that you keep in a safe place.

Would you like to know more about passwords? Encryption?
Reply with a yes or a question.

Till the next one,
Benedicte

Nice style. Educational. Actionable. TLDR is usually at the top. You say "write down" then suggest a password manager.

    Best of luck.

Thank you for the feedback. You are right, TLDR is usually at the top 🤦

I think this is bad from a UX stand point. Users lose passwords, etc all the time, even when there's money on the line. People have lost thousands of bitcoin because they lost their security key. Happens often enough that there's a subreddit full of examples: https://reddit.com/r/sfyl . And these are more technically advanced than the average user, since they were using bitcoin.

It is, but it is the only way if you do end-to-end encryption. I will in the future let them choose between encryption in transit/rest and end-to-end encryption. But not immediately.

WhatsApp manages to do it without requiring you to write your password

That is true, but with their solution you cannot freely move between devices.

You can access WhatsApp from the phone as well as browser. I think they have a mechanism for moving messages when you switch devices.

Thank you for the feedback, it is confusing the write it down vs. password manager.
