Yesterday I have radically simplified my landing page. What do you think?

In an effort to declutter the Skyhop landing page I have removed most generic marketing fuzz. In my experience landing pages are usually all about "look at who/what I am", while it does not really help people whom are visiting whom have a job to be done.

I figured there are primarily two groups visiting the website;

  1. People wanting to access my most popular free product; flight records
  2. People heading to the app itself

It's those two I tried to optimize for. I'm starting to believe word of mouth is more powerful than a landing page that explains it all. Regardless of this I think I did a reasonable job communicating what Skyhop is all about. Do you like it?

Here's the previous version for reference;

    The new hero area gives people no idea what the site is or why they should bother taking any action.

      Agree-- I think you've gone backwards. But I think you can add back in some welcome text (and I personally like the plane image above-- it tells me what kind logs we're talking about) and a single primary call to action ("Create Free Account in 10 Seconds" or whatever).

      Oof that's a harsh one, though I understand where that's coming from. Do you think it's possible to solve that using a different welcome text, while maintaining the current simplicity?

        Sure, if you come up with a concise and compelling message that clearly conveys your unique value proposition, then I don't see why not.

    @pheonix @SeanKirby @sales4nerds Thank you all for your honest feedback! I have gone and tried to update the landing copy. Let me know what you think about it now!

      It's a little better, but I think you still have room to improve on it.

      You have to be careful with yes/no questions, because it's too easy for someone to simply answer and leave without taking action.

      I would put a line or two about your unique value proposition then include your main CTA to log in or sign up and the get flight times as your secondary CTA.

      Instead of a third CTA (that's too many), perhaps just include a directional icon like an arrow indicating there's more info below.

      I like it, but I'm still not feeling quite right, and I finally figured out why-- this doesn't feel like a landing page-- it feels like the login page for someone who already knows what Skyhop does. Give me the tagline and some bullet points so I know if I should care about it... Design feels really nice, though.

      Looks much nicer with more context. Good job @Corstian!

    I'd say you can better serve both by having something a little more descriptive. No need to have marketing fuzz. Just an honest description: "A digital flight logbook." Maybe a screenshot. Maybe a couple things to re-assure the visitor ("is this private?" "how's this going to be around for long if it's free?"). A login for those who've used it before.

      I have had a signup box before, but that cluttered the experience much.

      You concern regarding a free product is something I share! I plan on selling paid subscription plans, though the logbook itself will stay free. It's something which I will further flesh out in the upcoming months.

      Anyhow, I have tried to improve the landing page copy and personally I think it has improved.

        I like it.

        About the stuff that's below the first screenful. Have you thought about having a little bit of it peak from the bottom of the window? It'd hint that there's more below.

        1. 1

          Thanks! Moving the box itself upwards (as I've subtly tried) clutters the landing. I like the emptiness of the page as is. What I've been thinking about is adding a subtle arrow pointing downwards as an additional clue.

    I'll say I like the UX. It's not overly complex or distracting as a first time visitor. There's no point in repeating Sean's (good point) but as far as the design goes I can see you going for a minimal approach, compared to the previous iteration (which is good). Is this project aimed at pilots or people in the aviation industry? I'm just wagering a guess.

      Thanks! Your first guess is right, I'm primarily targeting pilots. Still trying to come up with a catchy one liner to describe the project to a first time visitor...

        Good looks, you got it. Do let us know when you publish an update with that one-liner ;)
