Yet another contactless menu service: yay or nay?

Context: my sister owns a coffee shop. I am a Software Engineer. With the start of the pandemic she introduced the typical contactless menu accessible via a QR code and I helped her to quickly publish it online.

These days I got some spare time in hand and I've been thinking of building a little service to easily manage a digital menu online.

As expected, I found that there are a million different tools that offer the same service. Pieter has also built one a while back.

It seems like an extremely crowded place and it reminds me a little bit the case of those online forms builders. However, I also feel it is tapping into a quite big market and my gut feeling is that there could be space for building some integrations and/or added value services on top of it.

Probably not enough to build the next unicorn out of it, but good enough to sustain an indie dev.

So now my questions for you:

  1. For anyone owning a cafe/restaurant: have you found anything missing in the existing digital menu solutions out there? Anything you always dreamed of and was never available or affordable?
  2. For anyone that built something similar: why did you abandon it? What did you learn?
  3. For anyone else: any advice on how to approach this venture? Any suggestion on a potential niche to focus on?
