Hey hackers. I was thinking to build a CRM (Customer Relationship Manager) with good UX and globally distributed fast service. However, there are many CRM already in the market. What do you think, should I build another CRM? Can I compete with big players?
I would suggest you to avoid looking at the features of a new CRM and why yours could be better. Look at the target users you want to cover.
It seems that most of the CRMs out there, are focused and tuned to big companies that have a marketing department and salespersons sitting all day in front of a CRM.
I do not know if there are CRMs simple enough (and cheap) for small companies that do only basic marketing.
For my own needs, I had searched for Saas CRMs that have a permanent free plan.
I selected one that although it has a lot of complexity, it is missing some convenience features I wanted (e.g. hierarchical lists of contacts, form to sign up website visitors for a newsletter, who bought which product and when)
At that time, the same tempting thought also occurred to me: why not build a CRM.
But, instead of developing a new, why not just host and manage an existing opensource CRM, or even fork it to make it better?
Hey StarMessage,
Thanks for your valuable suggestion. Just wondering which open source CRM are you using and what features do you need in a CRM?
What if a CRM gives you and ability to own your data, where you can attach self hosted database?
What if a CRM is globally scaled and loading fast?
What if a CRM comes with fixed pricing for number of request rather than number of users. You can however add unlimited number of users to the extent your self hosted database allows?

You can have a look at suiteCRM.
I would be interested only on basic features, like hierarchical lists of contacts, email templates (e.g. having common footer), responsive layout of the emails, newsletter sign-up, who ordered what and at what time, tracking the emailing (open, click, visit to the website).
"What if a CRM is globally scaled and loading fast?"
I think you must leave this for the big, established players.
I like the idea of having the database on my own hosting. Maybe it could be a database with a known and reusable schema for contacts, like an LDAP?
The cost must be predictable for the customer and there must be a ROI.
i said "Yes" because i wanted to do this:
lol.
but, seriously... if you have a unique usecase and a customer already lined up... sure, why not?
but, if it's just another idea without deep thought and/or merit... then, maybe chat with a few folks first... and do a post on IH! which, you've done.
so, there.
Thanks for the comment and inspiration.
Yes, I do have a very unique usecase, but I don't know how to research for the demand. Where can I get the help for same. I've done keyword research but they are filled with competitors keywords.
I've already spent too much time learning CRM features from other SaaS. This idea is about 1 year old.
hang out where you think your customers are already hanging out. serve them. ask them questions.
it's not about keyword research... stop that. just literally build relationships.
Yes.
Some features I'm thinking right now:
Especially, what do you think about feature number 12 Own your data: Full control over data with self hosted database
