You can now create your own group on Indie Hackers ๐ŸŽ‰

It's been a crazy few months for Indie Hackers community, at least from my perspective. Things got a bit quiet in March, then suddenly it felt like there was this huge influx. On top of covid I've personally been challenged with the amount of growth happening here.

The activity has pretty much doubled, and alongside that comes interesting challenges with how best to deal with that. We thought the traffic and activity might die down, but there's not really any signs of that happening yet.

Growth from Exploding Topics.

Create Your Own Indie Hacker Group

So as part of this we've decided to open up groups for anyone to create. Think of them like your own reddit channel, but indie hacker style.

We have been experimenting with enabling some indie hackers to create their own groups. Now it is open for anyone to create their own group at Indie Hackers.

Once you have created one you will also be able to add moderators if you would like to some help managing it. There are also some basic moderation options.

The plan is to keep a close eye on how the groups are doing and build upon the functionality as groups grow. We welcome any feedback you may have.

As a community builder my one of my biggest worries is having empty or inactive groups. I hope you'll all make me proud and be mindful about creating something really special on this corner of the internet. ๐Ÿ˜Š

At the end of the day, any reasonable group goes, here are some things to bear in mind:

  • search through groups before creating one
  • you probably don't want to create a group on an identical topic
  • more niche groups probably make sense
  • you are responsible for keep it alive and well moderated
  • as things get busier here it will be harder to get posts visible on the homepage. Expect less, slower yet more focused engagement.
  • you can do them as a team
  • anything goes, location based ones could be interesting, as could tools based ones, feel free to post ideas of ones in the comments
  • creating groups and maintain content takes a bit of work, but if it is in line with your expertise then it could prove valuable for your longer term commitments, network and goals as an indie hacker
  • you can't change the name of a group, so think and type carefully!
  • you need 5 profile points to be able to create a group

I think now it will be IMPOSSIBLE for me to curate all IndieHackers content in my newsletter https://indieletters.com/

    1. 2

It is going to be tough, for sure. I assume the length of newsletter is going to increase!

  2. 6

This is very exciting! I just started one for React.js. I know there's already a Developers community, but I think it would be really fun to dig into some more technical React topics and share React libraries that can help people ship faster. Please join the group if you're interested.

PS. Looks like group icon uploading isn't working. It shows up when I upload but is gone when I refresh the page.

    1. 2

When I saw this - I could not resist the temptation to create a group for Vue developers๐Ÿ˜ https://www.indiehackers.com/group/vue

    2. 2

I think it's a caching issue and just takes some time. I saw your React group icon show up when testing for my icon but mine still didn't show up yet. Hopefully it'll get sorted out.

    This is great, love it!
Will be interesting to see how this goes moving forward.

I created a "Carrd" group, feel free to join it if you're a Carrd user.
    https://www.indiehackers.com/group/carrd

    Exciting times ahead!

    1. 2

Hi Martin!! It's Ki, I will join yours! :D

  4. 4

    That's awesome @rosiesherry!

I've just created a couple of groups: Barcelona and eSports, feel free to join any of them if you're interested ๐Ÿ™Œ

We can do a global tour once with localised groups once it is safe to travel. ๐Ÿ˜Š I'll be setting one up for Brighton soon.

    This is an awesome idea!

I have a great idea for a group.
But it tells me I need 5 points to create a group and I only have 4 points :(

    1. 4

I'm in the same boat - new to Indie Hackers, so sitting on 0, but have some great group ideas. Please send a few upvotes my way!

      1. 2

        Upvoted, good luck buddy!

        1. 1

          Much appreciated! :D

I upvoted your comment. You now have 5. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I just created a group for Game Development - A place to discuss all things GameDev
        https://www.indiehackers.com/group/game-development

        1. 2

Hi there! Is it okay for a 15 year old to join? My son has been seeking out other game developers, and Reddit keeps denying his requests for people to play/test his game. @rosiesherry Maybe this is a bigger question too - are there age limits for IndieHackers?

          1. 3

Hey, just created an account! I'm fifteen years old and just coded my first (text-adventure) game, would I be able to join the GameDev group?

Awesome! Created a group for Vietnam for any fellow Indie Hackers living here or interested in Vietnam :)

    1. 3

Tip: You can search for people by location on IH, maybe create a post and tag a few recent/active members in?

      1. 2

        Ah, nice! Didn't know that!!

This is great. There was a clear suppressed demand for local groups so people could find fellow Indie Hackers around them.

I live close to Lisbon, so I've created a Lisbon group! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿจ๐Ÿ•

As an immigrant, I really wanted to expand my local network (I basically only know people from work and it's very hard to make new local friends (after they are 30, people usually stick with their existing friends groups). It's actually one of my goals for the year.

So, if you are an alfacinha, a digital nomad, immigrant or just passing by go give it a look! ๐ŸšŸ

Congrats on this big new feature Rosie! Naturally mow there will be loads of new feature requests. I have a few already lol. Happy to discuss at any time

more niche groups probably make sense

    I see micro communities here?

    1. 3

Yes more micro communities, though people need to bear in mind that they take some commitment to maintain.

  14. 2

That is great to hear. I just created a separate group for Quora Marketing.

  15. 2

@krupali maybe we can do one of these for our content review/support group?

    1. 2

Great idea! It was on my list for this week but Iโ€™ve been wiped out by some bug (thankfully not COVID) so Iโ€™ll get to it at the weekend or next week. Thanks!

      1. 2

Sounds good - hope you feel better!

  16. 2

I made two groups, one for the place I live.

Because it feels like I am the only one from this island in IH, hoping they find this.

Also one for my second side project,

Because the product is mostly for indiehackers and what better place to support them than here.

Thank you for this guys, is a great Idea.

Hooray! Exciting moves for Indie Hackers.

I just created a group for discussing and learning how to do effective customer and market research.

  18. 2

    :) and the floodgates open!

    1. 4

And the group spamming Begins ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘

      1. 2

Quite possibly, but hopefully it will be a minority and not visible to most.

      2. 1

        i hope not!

  19. 2

    This is fantastic! ๐ŸŽ‰

I made one about privacy: https://www.indiehackers.com/group/privacy

  20. 1

@rosiesherry How do you tell if a comment has been moderated? I posted a comment n a group, I see it in the group but I don't see it in my history timeline. Is this a bug or has it been moderated?

    1. 1

We can't moderate bugs, only downvote or delete them.

It's possibly a bug, which comment are you referring to?

      1. 1

I emailed you the details. It now appears in my history timeline.
Update Tue-Jul-14: it now appears in my timeline but I cannot tell if it was moderated and then released, a bug, or random glitch.
My original questions remains: how do you tell if a comment has been moderated?

  21. 1

Am I the only one who concerned that Indiehacker will become Reddit?

  22. 1

Hey @rosiesherry I would love to change my group icon without breaking the brand (I actually love the icons, it's just that two other groups share the same now). Where could I find icons in the same style to play around with?

  23. 1

Congrats to the IH team. This is an excellent feature and I hope IH groups turn out way better than sub-reddits ๐Ÿ˜‰

Have started a new group "Growth From 1K to 1M" for growth geeks who want to discuss about how to grow a startup from 1000 to 1 million customers. Feel free to join if this is your jam - https://www.indiehackers.com/group/growth-from-1k-to-1m

See you on the other side!

  24. 1

    Hi @rosiesherry,

    Interesting development.

As a community builder my one of my biggest worries is having empty or inactive groups.

Did you consider something like Stackoverflow's Area 51 where proposals for new topics go through a process to help determine viability before being accepted?

    1. 1

Not really, sounds like a lot of work to me ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I think we'd prefer to see how indie hackers can form groups and design things around what we think works well.

Of course, I'm here and will do what I can to help and guide.

  25. 1

    Excellent idea @rosiesherry !
I've just created the group for France
    Feel free to join ;)

  26. 1

I accidentally left my own group. Looks like I'm no longer the moderator after rejoining. :(

    1. 1

Whoops, can you confirm the group?

      1. 1

Do you mind deleting it? It's called "First 30 Customers"

  27. 1

That's so COOL. I've just created local group for Russian community https://www.indiehackers.com/group/russia

But since the IH is in English I moderate it to English usage only. If anyone wants to join/help please let me know!

  28. 1

This is fantastic, going to explore the existing groups!

  29. 1

Amazing growth. Just created tutorials for Indiehackers teaching fellow IndieHackers what they know best.

  30. 1

While this seems like a great idea, I have already started to see many duplicate groups. is there any measure you will take to check on that? @rosiesherry

    For example:- this and this

    P.S. I made a group around Psychology

    1. 1

Bit those groups are by the same person, Iโ€™ll reach out and find and discuss.

      1. 1

I understand. But then there are also groups which seems around the same topic but are of different names.
        Ethics - [https://www.indiehackers.com/group/ethics]
        Decision Making - [https://www.indiehackers.com/group/decision-making]

Aren't these the same thing? I am sorry but I don't want to sound like overreacting ๐Ÿ˜…

  31. 1

This is cool! I've seen few posts where people are either wanting to sell their side gig or others looking to take over. Therefore, I've created "Business for Sale" group.

    https://www.indiehackers.com/group/business-for-sale/

  32. 1

This sounds and looks awesome, canโ€™t wait to get started.

Iโ€™m not going to flood the groups or anything but is it possible to create and manage multiple groups? If so, are there any limits?

    @rosiesherry

    1. 2

Yep, you can have multiple groups. I need to do more work to make the UI for browsing and discovering groups a bit more scalable, but you shouldn't have to worry about flooding it.

      1. 1

Thanks so much, I have a few ideas and wanted to make sure I didn't have to choose. I'll go ahead and make the ones I can think of for now and I guess inevitably some will get more traction than others.

I'm very excited to see how this feature grows and improves with time!
