You should use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community

Love this reflection on the tradeoffs of using Slack/Discord versus forums, sync versus async; it's developer-oriented but the issues apply across domains.

I think chats are for being social, where it doesn't matter if everything disappears, and forums are for discourse, where more thought and research is preferred.
