Most workers in startups have already heard those words from a manager of technical director. Hard to blame them, it's true that automate multiple daily one minute task seems counterintuitive.
Often, the technical team is buried under dozens, hundreds of feature/bugs tickets to solve, and can't find the time to work on tools or automation for the marketing or customer success team. 😔
Let's assume you're automating the 1 minute task your teammate do 5 times a day. The time investment table describe that you can spend less than 6 days before it's counterproductive to automate the task.
Do you think it would take 6 days for your engineers to find a solution to automate? Probably not. The benefits are however immediately clear, your non-technical teammate can focus their time where they have real value instead of mechanical work.
Still, even with the right number in mind, it's hard to delegate people from the technical team, because this table does not take into account the productivity loss from context switching and pausing on-going work.
