Young Makers #1: Making Your First Profit from Newsletters

I struggled to find high-quality advice on making profitable stuff. So I’m creating this newsletter to help myself and other makers learn and grow. 🙏

This first edition, I interview newsletter creators who have already made money. I took notes on how they did it so you can learn from it.

In this newsletter, I interview 3 people:

  1. Carl Chenet who runs a 3000+ subscriber newsletter and has made around €400+ in revenue

  2. Dru Riley runs Trends.VC pitched his newsletter. His newsletter helps makers and investors discover new markets and ideas.

  3. Andrew Kamphey who runs InfluenceWeekly, with over 6000+ subscribers and

Here are the key takeaways:

1. Think of monetizing early because your costs will catch up with you
2. Turn your passion into a sustainable pursuit by monetizing early
3. Tell people you’re looking for sponsors early on to get noticed
4. Don’t be afraid to charge higher amounts for sponsorships early on
5. Stay positive and play the long game
6. Leverage platforms like Buy Me A Coffee to get donations
7. Think of sponsors as partners; talk about their products / tools you love

If you found this useful, check out the full interviews with the full context in the link below:

It's been a pleasure seeing you launch so quickly. We just hopped on a call earlier this week and now it looks like you're ready to conquer the world!

Thank you Andrew! I know right, I can't believe how fast things went! Huge huge thank you to you!

Great points! I love this - I think the key thing I learned was to implement value based pricing with the work and time you put into newsletters and products in general - if people don't want to pay what might be considered a "premium" price, then they're not a customer in the first place.

Thanks Kaito! Value pricing might be tricky for new young makers just starting out. But hey, that's an idea that could be explored in a Newsletter Issue!

Huge thanks and shoutout to @chaica @dru_riley @AndrewKamphey for helping with this newsletter issue. They're really helpful towards other makers – the advice they've provided in these interviews are going to be really helpful to many other makers looking to start newsletters!
