This design decision is more significant than it might first appear. When employees can see exactly what their manager sees about them, the whole energy of the tool shifts from surveillance to shared reality. That distinction matters a lot for how people actually use it day-to-day.
The question about where the line should sit is interesting. My gut says it should default to maximum transparency and only restrict access when there is a specific, justified reason. Hidden data creates distrust even when there is nothing to hide.
I think about this in the context of goldenweeks, a 2-week deep work retreat in Zanzibar. One thing that makes the retreat dynamic work well is that everyone is there voluntarily and everyone is visible. No one is watching over anyone but the shared context makes accountability natural. Tools like Trackly seem to be trying to recreate that same mutual visibility in a distributed team. Good product thinking.
Great point. I think the biggest shift is psychological. When employees can see the exact same attendance, breaks, and leave records as their manager, it creates transparency instead of suspicion. Trust comes from everyone working with the same data, not different versions of it.

But managers and admins get a completely different, much deeper view: daily reports, activity and productivity breakdowns, leave management, GPS tracking, and usage reports broken down per staff member daily. So the "mutual visibility" is really about the shared basics, not identical access, managers still need the full operational picture to actually run the team
