Your personal skill tree

Hi Indie hackers! I would be grateful to hear your first reaction to the tool me and my BF are making. 🥰

We are making a tool for people to make their own personal skill tree 🌲 In it, you can store all your bookmarks, files, and notes directly to the skill it belongs too, so its right there waiting for you the next time you need it.

It's like a map of all your knowledge 🕵️‍♀️

(I attached a screenshot of my personal skill tree)

I've been looking for an application just like this! I hope development goes well! Would love to try this out.

Wow, exactly like this!? Its the first time I have heard that. It's such a weird application😅✌

The development is going pretty well. We are working our asses off, and are aiming for launch at the end of April.

I think it's a great idea, having a tool to visualize and map out knowledge and skills, especially for someone like me who has so many learning aspirations.

I signed up for updates on your website. Happy development!

I'm a big fan of mind map, and this is a very interesting use case for them.

I can see this being useful in a few ways:

    • first is what you noted: as a personal bookmark of items, links and resources
    • second, as an add-on to Linked in, or a replacement of a portfolio site. I can see this graphic / visual presentation being appealing to designers and recent grads who don't want to learn a lot about web dev, but want to have a differentiated web presence. The editing layer and the presentation layer could have more options too.

We haven't included a share mode in our build yet, but that is a good idea!

I actually made a mind map of my skills in coggle and used it in job interviews with great success. My regular resume did not do my range of skills justice, so I made a map with skills and stars to indicate my competency in different subjects.

My original skill tree made in coggle:

Hey Gina! awesome that your working on a project I am too. As long as the skill tree, I'm curious to know what problem are you trying to solve? I kinda don't see myself using a skill tree unless is for maybe posting it on LinkedIn but honestly not quite sure how would I take advantage of it.

Most of the tools I use are so intuitive to open up on my mac. I'm a developer so I work with quite a few. Maybe I see myself some sort of notes tool that I can organize by projects currently using Google docs but I can see that experience being improved.

Hi, thanks for the answer, Steven!

I frequently switch the type of skills I need to use, as I perform a wide range of tasks, and often, I have to do something I haven't done for months or even years. Knowledge fade over time, and trying google was an inefficient way to rekindle the skill. I tried using bookmarks and keeping documents in dropbox paper, but it became too cluttered after a while, and I didn't use it anymore. Now when I have to revisit an old skill, say "how to design forms," I open that node in the tree, and everything is ready.
