Most software gets designed for the person who buys it — someone at a desk, two monitors, full signal, coffee in hand.
The people I build for aren't that person.
They're a contractor checking a job between stops. A seasonal hiring manager doing payroll from a job trailer. A short-term rental host flipping a unit on one bar of signal. A guide leading a trip with no signal at all until 6pm.
Their reality: a cracked phone screen, sun glare, gloves half the time, and zero patience for a 6-step flow.
That one constraint quietly decides everything. If a feature needs two monitors and steady wifi to be useful, it's useless to them — no matter how clever it is. So the bar isn't "does it work in a demo." It's "does it work with one thumb, in the sun, on the worst phone you've ever seen."
Building for the field instead of the desk changes what "good" even means.
For those of you building: who's the actual person using your product in the wild — and is it the same person you designed for?

Follow-up from the field-not-desk week: turns out the cracked-phone-in-a-truck user has a counterpart — the supplier behind the counter still quoting prices off paper. Spent this week wiring up free supplier price lists on the trades side of the ecosystem so contractors pull live prices into estimates instead of playing phone tag. Same lesson, other side of the counter: the people doing the real work were never at a desk either.
