You're doing landing pages wrong. And it's killing sales. Here's how to fix it....

Want more sales on your landing page?

Of course you do.

Let's do this.

1. Stop using video

video study

Unbounce did a deep dive into 35,000 landing pages.

They tested background videos and featured videos.

Landing pages with video got considerably less conversions then landing pages with text and image.

Videos don’t increase conversions.

It’s a myth.

Use images only on your landing page.

2. Using images of people? Make sure they’re facing you

eyes study

The University of Newcastle did a 2 year study on bike theft.

They placed a ‘watching eyes’ poster in places where bike theft was occurring.

Placing these posters reduced bike theft by a whopping 62%!

Eye contact is a powerful thing.

Make sure the people on your landing page are looking at your users.

You will get higher engagement.

3. Copy is more important than design

copy study

Copy is more important than design.

36,928 landing pages were tested by Unbounce for design versus copy.

They found that copy has twice the impact on landing page conversion rates versus design.

90% of your efforts should be spent crafting amazing copy for your landing pages!

Spend 10% of your time on design.

Sorry, I didnt really get the "copy"part of the article. Does copy refer to using website templates or to simply copy other website's UI/UX? Kinda lost me there hehe :D

    1. 4

copy as in copywriting. The text/words.

      1. 1

in other words the wording/content matters more than how the page looks?

        1. 2

Yes, focus on getting your copy right, its WAY more important then design.

But still have a good user experience!

  2. 2

    3rd one is absolutely true!!

I have seen many landing pages with poor design convert, just because their copy is good. Landing page need not to attract your audience, but it should talk about their pain problems and relate to the audience.

    1. 1

Yes! I remember visiting pro copywriters landing pages... they were so long and wordy and ugly! But man... the words were SUPER convincing right! I'm spending much more time on copy and less on design now.

  3. 2

I created a landing page for my weekly newsletter yesterday and now I think I should add some changes using your tips!

    1. 1

Sounds like a plan! May you CONVERT LIKE CRAZY!!!

  4. 2

Loved this article and so many great tips with data. It's also good to know that if I have an image of someone facing the user they are 62% less likely to steal my website. 😂 Jokes aside, there is data suggesting the image should be looking towards where you want the user to look such as a sign-up box, as we naturally look to where 'the herd' is looking. I would suggest IH's test different directions of the eyes in images. But seriously, this post was amazing.

    1. 1

Exactly, no one stealing your website of there's eyes looking at you LOL!

Seriously, DIRECTION -> does = conversions though... I still see people use images looking away or in another direction...

Thanks for the kind words : )

These tips are absolute fire! 🔥 As someone trying to grow my startup's Twitter following, this advice is worth its weight in gold.

The data on video is mind-blowing - I can't believe how much less effective video is compared to images and text. 🤯 My marketing budget is tight, so I'm definitely switching to photos only. Those stats don't lie.

And the tip about facing images toward the reader...genius! 💡 I never realized the psychological impact of eye contact. But a 62% reduction in theft?! You better believe I'm updating all my graphics.

But by far the most valuable part is prioritizing copy over design. I'm guilty of obsessively tweaking designs when I should be laser focused on words that convert. 90% copy, 10% design - noted! 📝✏️

This will improve my landing pages and Twitter marketing for sure. What other proven conversion tips can you share? This advice is too good not to beg for more! 🙏

Glad I could help. I'm living this stuff daily now so it's super important to me too : )

But yes! Concentrate on your copy for sure, the design can be rough! In fact it helps - AS LONG AS THE UX IS GOOD.

Make sure the UX is still solid guys : )

  6. 2

Great post. I've put videos on my landing pages before, but the long ones really slow down load times 😭. Good to know that removing them shouldn't decrease conversions.

    1. 1

Yes! Speed is also a big factor right...

I will also add 5 cents. Avoid complex terms, comparisons, and metaphors. Clearly answer the question on the main screen: What is your product for?

Write it in a way even a 12-year-old can understand.

Amazing insights on landing pages backed by data. I use this to setup my landing page soon. Thanks Craig

Mind blown! 🤯 I've been doing landing pages all wrong. No more lame stock videos - images only from now on.

And facing people TOWARDS the viewer? Genius. It's all about that eye contact, baby. 👀👌

But copy over design? Whaaat? You're telling me I don't need to spend weeks tweaking fonts and colors? Music to my ears!💃

This advice just increased my chances of success tenfold. Who else is ready to optimize their landing pages and double conversions overnight? Share your top takeaway below! 👇💡

My biggest win - stop thinking video increases engagement. The data doesn't lie, text and images convert way better. What clicked most for you? Let's swap tips! 😎🗣️

      @SynapseTech8

I know right!? I'm a designer and reading this data was quiet suprising in regards to copy vs design.

I think it's great, it's technically easier for non-designers to write better copy I think.

Bonus! There's also evidence that ugly pages ( with good UX ) convert way better then beautifully slick landing pages - the data suggests people 'believe' a page that is a bit rough and straightforward.

There is so many roughly designed landing pages that convert like crazy so I can see this is true.

Here's the link to the Unbounce study for you about video for you:

I've created a WHOLE book on this stuff - plus I have skin in the game cos if I create a landing page that sells a book about landing pages - it must convert right!!??

Does holding a coffee cup and phone improve conversion?

    1. 1

As a rule, you should feature image of 'your ideal customer'

So yes, a dude checking his sales on his phone whilst grabbing a coffee is my target audience - it's about being relatable.

For example, if your target customer is say a plumber - you would have an image of a plumber on your landing page : )
