Very much in agreement with these qualities, I have worked with a variety of people over the last ten years in a number of companies. One of the things that makes a team the most effective is having shared values, and positive ones at that, which will bring out the potential of each individual.

This was a pretty good article! Business is about human relationships, so although we strive to find great business partners there will always be bumps in the road. I've interviewed entrepreneurs from all walks of life and every single one of them had stories of wins and losses with partners. I think you find the best co-founder you can and then work hard to make it a healthy and trusting relationship. If you are looking to see eye to eye with your co-founder/s all the time you are not looking at it from a logical place.

If you would like to listen to my podcast interviews checkout the Michaelson Williams TSX Podcast. My podcast have been called "outside of the cookie cutter Matrix".

You'll love this inter with Billion Dollar Deal Maker Melvin Nunnery. Melvin talks about everything dealing with building a technical startup, from living in his car to an attempted hostel takeover of his company. This is a killer two part interview!

To conduct my research, I spoke with over 30 founders and a three hour discussion over supper to discuss my findings and the experiences of others. I was amazed to discover that trust was the most sought-after quality. It also became apparent that there is very little discussion about the possibility of being solo founders - did Jeff Bezos even need one?

I think having the right team is absolutely critical for success. I have started multiple companies, and the ones that succeed always come down to a great team.

With the right team obstacles are easier to overcome.

For me the most important factor in a co-founder is that we are not copies of each other. A common goal is critical, but different skillsets and world views are needed in order to be truly great IMO.

      Keep us posted! Don't forget a NO co-founder is better than a bad/useless co-founder.

Have you heard of Kabila - it's a cofounder matching tool, in case it helps anyone looking for a cofounder. I have been a part of their online community and they have some great valuable sessions for founders.

Yup! I've had 3 startups and for the first 2 I hired the completely wrong co-founders. I went in with the boss hiring an employee approach with the first one and attracted someone who needed constant support and supervision then went the other way for the second one - hiring someone very dominant and pro-active but to the point they took over and were very argumentative. 3rd time was the charm and found someone that plugged the gaps of knowledge I didn't have while also being easy to work with.

Great advice. I think we often believe we know what we're looking for but our own biases work against us. I found what helps is actually picturing scenarios in the future of things that would either happen on a day-to-day basis in your business or something that may go wrong, and then thinking about how you would want your co-founder to react in those scenarios - then look for someone with those qualities and skills.
