June 21, 2026 How I built a free abacus tool that teaches mental math

The Problem: Math Shouldn't Be Behind a Paywall When I looked at the landscape of tools for teaching kids mental math, I noticed a frustrating trend: the best resources—especially for learning the abacus—were expensive. Parents were expected to pay steep subscription fees just to give their kids a foundational advantage in math. I believe that foundational education should be accessible to everyone, which is why I set out to build Abacustool.

The Vision My primary goal was simple: helping small kids to learn and compete absolutely freely without paying anything. I wanted to create a space "where we smash math together," making the learning process interactive, engaging, and, most importantly, 100% free.

Building the Tool Building an interactive abacus meant focusing heavily on the user experience. It needed to be intuitive enough for a young child to use without a steep learning curve, but responsive enough to actually train their muscle memory and mental calculation speeds. I focused on a clean UI, removing any distracting elements so the kids could just focus on the beads and the numbers.

What's Next? Right now, the core tool is up and running. Seeing kids actually use it to visualize math and improve their calculation speed has been incredibly rewarding. Moving forward, I want to introduce friendly, free competitions to keep the kids motivated and engaged.

I'd love to get feedback from the Indie Hackers community! How do you usually go about marketing free educational tools to parents and teachers without a massive ad budget?
