Generate banners for social media & online advertising.

June 25, 2020 40,000 Generated banners!

Our product is a social & advertising banner generation platform. Last week we've launched on ProductHunt and since then we've seen a crazy amount of traffic on Abyssale.com!

Today we've just hit over 40,000 generated banners on the platform! And this number is growing as I'm writing this milestone 😎

Launching on PH is a great way to boost your website traffic and create some hype around your product/solution. The trick here is to retain some kind of traffic stability because most of the time you will see a massive drop in traffic the days following your launch...

So far the most interesting point is that PH is no longer our primary source of traffic and we still have a big and steady influx of visitors every single day!

June 17, 2020 Abyssale is live on Product Hunt 🎉

Today, We are very very excited to share Abyssale's launch on Product Hunt 🚀

https://www.producthunt.com/posts/abyssale

Back in January 2019, we started this adventure with big dreams and hope. After our alpha launch back in September and the awesome support & feedback we've gained from it, we've been working very hard to deliver a solution that could generate great banners in a matter of minutes without any design skills!

Since the start of our beta, we've steadily onboarded customers to the platform and helped them scale their marketing efforts! So far our customers' ad campaigns have excellent results and we can say with confidence that our generated banners are on par with visual assets designed by "real designers".

Our entire algorithm is built to mimic how a real designer would create banners. Since the beginning of this project, the evolution of one of our metrics "quality perception" has been exponentially rising. With the help of our users, I'm pretty confident this trend will continue.

Getting to the stage of being able to launch Abyssale on Product Hunt has been a long, but totally worthwhile, journey! We'd like to thank all the IH community for your feedback & support! 🙌

If you are interested in our project and journey you can help us and show some support on our PH post. Thank you IH!

    Awesome!

I'm taking it for a spin. Definitely, making creatives is really annoying

    1. 2

Sure! Do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions :) The generation output can sometimes be a bit tricky. With some tweaks here and there on your brand presets you can get some awesome results!

      1. 2

Will do! I actually used to work a lot with banners and banner builders. Pretty cool to see a new take on it :)

        1. 2

I'm very interested to get your feedback :)

  2. 4

Congrats and good luck Alessandro! Upvoted. We also launched today :-D https://www.producthunt.com/posts/shipit

Thank you! And good luck on your launch as well!

  3. 2

Pretty cool product from the looks of it. Gonna give it a try real soon.
    Awesome work, Alessandro!

    1. 2

Thank you! Keep me updated if you have any feedback!

  4. 2

Congrats! Upvoted :-) Looks like you guys did fantastic on PH!

    1. 2

      Thank you @mizkirsten

  5. 2

used it! pretty cool tool! Definitely better looking than Google Ads' text ad to banner generator.

But I didn't quite get the pricing. Can you elaborate?

    1. 2

Thanks! That's the whole point of our rendering algorithm :)

Could you be more specific? Do you feel that our current pricing page is not clear enough?

      1. 2

I didn't quite get what "1000 Generations / Month" means. Is that an impression (if I'm seeing this before I see that I actually download the assets, I can think that you'll just give me a tag to point at from Doubleclick or whatever).

After going through the flow it seems like that is 1000 Unique banners (which is still quite a lot for a free plan!)

        1. 2

It is indeed quite difficult to understand without trying the platform, we will find some ways to make it more clear! Thanks for the feedback @Fkrauss

          So how does it works:
When you start generating banners they appear 6 by 6 and each time you click on "Generate more banners" it creates 6 more banner designs.

Each time you click on generate it goes +6/1000. This is what we count as "Generations /month".

You could "bookmark" 1000 banners each month, but would only be able to download 5 of them for free :)

We had to do this because we store every single generated banner and you probably know that at some point CDN storage begins to be quite costly.

  6. 2

Yeyy congrats to you and your team, I've upvoted and also left a nice comment hope you can get it the top!

Thank you mate! Hopefully, we can have at least a badge ;)

September 12, 2019 1700+ Alpha Subscribers!

Product Hunt is one of the most peculiar places in the web product and marketing landscape, we launched our alpha last week on PH and were pretty surprised with the results we got so far.

In one month we grew from 500 to 1700+ users on our alpha! Obviously PH had a huge role in this outcome, even after our launch last week users keep coming and subscribing on our landing page and we still have a quite nice daily traffic on our LP (around 300/day).

Obviously finishing 2nd of the day has probably a big impact on those metrics, but for the long trend finishing in the top 10 of the week is also an objective worth taking into consideration!

Getting this much traffic and subscriptions on this short period of time had a very beneficial impact:

  • We discovered that our current AWS setup its handling pretty quite well this kind of volume
  • More than 160 users sent us feedback (We’re glad we moved our survey on our platform)
  • We have a clear view of the back and front errors that need to be fixed
  • Since we don’t charge money for our solution during this alpha, we can’t say we found market fit but we clearly have some market interest and this gave us a great confidence/morale boost.

Key takeaway: Having a lot of followers on social networks does not equate to having an interested and committed audience that would jump through hoops if you say so. The three of us has less than 300+ follower combined on Twitter still we got more upvotes (and quality ones) than other products launched by « bigger » players.

Just went through the product - absolutely amazing! The banners it generated looked great. Definitely recommend using this if you want to get some quick banners (or even banner ideas) for your product/service.

Landing page is great, love the little video/gif showing it all works.

Left some feedback after generating the banners. One piece of feedback I forgot to leave: when you select 'images from Unsplash', you only get 6 images and it looks like there's no way to refresh it either. I think expanding on that a bit will make it a lot easier to select great images for your ads.

But, all in all, absolute 10/10 experience. Keep it going, loved using this. Took me maybe 3 minutes to generate 5 great banners for https://earlyusergrowth.com.

    1. 2

Thanks a lot @FrankHeijdenrijk this means a lot for us!

We received your feedback and i will come back at you later on today.

I saw the banners you generated they do look nice, there are still some glitches here and there, but hopefully the overall quality of banners will greatly increase in the upcoming months.

Our Unsplash integration is purely technical, and it will be greatly improved for our upcoming beta.

Fun fact: We got accepted on Unsplash partnership program by the end of the day of our launch (We sent our application a little bit late) and @LemRemy who is one of my cofounders pushed in production our Unsplash update from a bar at around 20:00 pm (French time)

  2. 3

That’s a very nicely done landing page

  3. 1

Just tested it and a Nice service with huge potential!

    Two things:

    • it would be nice if we can have a live preview within all the ongoing process
    • are you considering for saving all the data for later editing / reuse / duplicate. eg. maybe i would like to change the text a bit, or the logo, or the image of a banner.

    Thanks!

    1. 1

      Thank you @zergione !

      • Due to the nature of our algo it is quite difficult to achieve this and be relevant.
      • Of course, we plan to add some additional feature including edition

We usually send a changelog for our updates, you can find them on our blog https://blog.abyssale.com/tag/changelog/

      1. 1

Yep, I saw the changelog page. It's handy!

The live preview situation could help in case you misspell something or if you decide to try with another background. So you can navigate back and forth in the onboarding process.

        1. 1

We had feedback suggesting quick edition mode during the rendering, would this make sense for you ?

          1. 1

Yes, i think that that can be a good workaround

  4. 1

Congrats that's amazing! I really like your landing btw :)

Thanks @TonyMaguire and indeed as a designer myself I know the pain of creating these types of assets for marketing.

Considering that nowadays design teams are overwhelmed with a lot of menial tasks that don't bring value to the actual product, if this type of service existed when I was working in startups I would have directed the marketing team to use it, instead of bothering me with creating tons of banners that are meant to be consumed on a daily basis and for so have a limited lifespan.

Thank you for trying out our platform, as I said in a previous comment our focus is to bring as much value as possible by adding new formats, layouts, and decorations on a regular basis. The more people try out the system the more it helps us improve our algorithms.

Hit me up in our feedback panel on Abyssale if you are interested to be shortlisted in our closed paid beta.

September 4, 2019 Our alpha is live on Product Hunt 🎉

Hello everyone!

Today, We are very very excited because we are launching Abyssale alpha on Product Hunt 🚀🚀

https://www.producthunt.com/posts/abyssale-alpha

Beginning of this year, we wondered about generating procedurally design assets. After many discussions, customer discoveries & surveys, we found out that marketing a product often requires the creation of visual content which at first sight seems simple but in fact, is a tough task because it usually involves design skills & knowledge that only a designer has.

Everyday banner ads and other types of marketing assets are published online, this is why we were convinced that something was currently lacking in the marketing automation landscape.

Hence we decided to build Abyssale, a platform that enables you to generate marketing banners for your business with minimal inputs from your end (text, logo, picture(s) & additional styling options).

More than a half year later, here we are, launching and hoping for our product (Abyssale alpha) to shine ⭐

If you are interested in our project and journey you could help us and show some support on our PH post.

The designs look incredible, can you explain a little bit how it works behind the scenes to generate always fresh looks?

    1. 3

      Thank you.

How it works under the hood is a secret sauce :)

But basically our generation engine takes every inputs/asset given by a user during a generation funnel, then it extracts their intrinsic properties (colors, luminosity, text length...) and from those find the best possible layout then render the banners.
As you can see this process is quite fast (~200ms for each banner) and includes lots of randomness because we think that each individual has specific tastes & color preferences.

Hoping my answer clarify a little bit the process ;) Don't hesitate if you have more questions

August 19, 2019 20 Customer Discovery Calls

To better understand the current challenges our prospect userbase is currently facing, we initiated one month ago a round of discussions with CMO's, acquisition experts & founder's from a wide range of company sizes.

How:
Reach our network (Mostly Linkedin & Friends) to set-up 30min Google Hangout call with ideal customers.

Difficulty:

  • Easy to Medium
  • Mostly time-consuming
  • Doing this during summer is a challenge by itself (a lot of people are OOF especially in Europe)
  • Defining ahead the topics needed to be covered during these interviews is also a great exercise > this will put you in the shoes of your prospects.

Objective:

  • Validate our current alpha build
  • Prioritize our roadmap for the Beta release
  • Discover new pain-points and challenges we did not think of
  • Get insights on possible pricing models

Results:
Talking with a wider range of company sizes gave us a better understanding of marketing pain-points companies are facing at each step of their growths.

Having real discussions with people greatly helped to shape our sales pitch and how to shift-it for different types of prospects.

There are some specificities between B2C and B2B types of companies, mostly around the acquisition channels they are targeting and how they address their userbase.

Our product vision did not pivot but the timing for each feature releases has been ordered differently to enhance our go-to-market strategy.

Next-step:

  • Add 20 more interviews to our backlog
  • Get more B2B type of businesses

Tips:
These types of interviews should not be about your product, but about their current working process & pain-points = LISTEN

Keep in mind the topics you wish to cover (print your topics on a sheet of paper) and jump between topics while keeping the discussion as fluid as possible = This is a discussion, not an interrogatory.

The first interviews will seem a bit weird, but as you practice your discussion flow will improve greatly (you won't need that sheet of paper anymore)

Keep track of every discussion by taking notes and store them/rank them/... = We use Airtable to arrange and track everything.

Use Calendly to ease-up the meeting scheduling (Doing everything by hand is very ineffective and results in many email back-and-forths)

Thanks for sharing, it's really useful to see how others do things.

    1. 1

      You're welcome!

  2. 1

I like this approach, from what I can read from your blog you already have an mvp to show, so I think you are on right path to validate your assumptions and ideas.
How do you balance this effort of customer discovery and working on mvp ? I mean 50% time each day, depend on schedule or what ?
In your experience is feasible to validate with potential customer about pricing too or is too early ?

    1. 1

We are currently 3 working on Abyssale.

In order to be as efficient as possible, I mainly conduct these interviews myself, they take around 30min of my time and I have around 3 to 4 interviews per week scheduled... In-fine it is not really that time-consuming to conduct them.

From what I've seen so far, you can always discuss about pricing but you need to be smart about it and only talk about this subject at the end of the interview after you've explained all the possibility offered by your solution and give enough time for the prospect to really understand your proposition value and what they could gain by using your product. (ie: "If given a range how much would you pay for this type of product")

      1. 1

I agree talking about money should be last point, but is also important to validate it too.

Keep track of every discussion by taking notes and store them/rank them/... = We use Airtable to arrange and track everything.

What do you track exactly ?

        1. 1
          • Company size (mapping the requested features + the potential pricing plan/model)
          • Business type/model (SEO + advertising segmentation)
          • Job title (for potential advertising segmentation targeting on LinkedIn)
          • name + email (for future contact)
          • Prospect possibility to be onboarded afterward (0 to 5 stars rating)
          • Related feature requested (this help to plan the roadmap)
          • Other things related to our market (advertising & marketing)
          • Complete note written by myself during the meeting
          1. 1

            Thanks for sharing!

            1. 1

This is why we come here :)

  3. 1

That's great! This is very helpful

How difficult was it to get people to agree to an interview though, and how did you get them to?
In my mind, not very many people would be willing to dedicate time to just talk to "some sales person".

    1. 2

It was not that difficult but mostly time-consuming... as I explained during July/August there are a lot of people OOF in France (our country)

I was especially not driving this meeting as a "sale meeting" and I never pushed our product, I just started the discussion with a simple sentence like "we are currently building a product for marketing teams in order for them... " then pushed the topics that I explicitly talked about in our email exchange "I'm looking to understand what is your current process..."

Most of them asked in the last 5min "btw what are you guys building ? because all these questions seemed very interesting" and most of them were willing to be kept updated on our progress.

      1. 2

Thank you very much. Yeah, that makes sense. Very useful information.

        1. 1

          You're welcome!

August 8, 2019 500+ Alpha Subscribers!

With little to no marketing effort, our alpha subscriber list grew to more than 500 users!

We got a great uptick of users when we got showcased on Betalist (end of May) this got us roughly 100 emails in 1 day.

Our acquisition rate spiked up to 13% at some point, this toned down to a steady 6-7% for the past 2months now. Surprisingly we are getting some organic traffic (and signups from it) with a single landing page, though launching our blog mid-June quite helped a lot (great to steadily grow your Domain Authority).

There are definitively some improvements that could be made on the current landing page… Also, spending more time on marketing our product could most probably increase our current numbers.

    Hey Alessandro,

Did you just add your product to Betapage? Or did you have any marketing efforts such as advertising, featuring, asking your friends to like it?

    1. 1

To give you a transparent recap:

      • We got featured on Betalist on May 24, 2019
      • We got featured on Betapage 4months ago (can't recall the exact date)
      • Submitted our landing to Onepagelove in October: I paid 19$ for this (mainly because I'm a designer proud of my work more than anything else) & It is a niche website about custom designed onepager landing pages > The audience is mainly designer > only interesting for you if this is your target demographic.
      • Created a Ship page on ProductHunt: We paid 700$ for this - mainly for the AWS credit + Stripe credit than the Ship product itself
      • Right now we have 5 blog posts + 1 manifesto (duplicated on both our blog and medium) > Writing articles is the most time-consuming task in this marketing efforts so far.
      • No featuring / Didn't hard-push on our friends to like or share anything / no Adwords / no advertising / ...

If you have other questions feel free to ask @maxshash

Thank you for your kind words! To give you more insights:

      • The landing page design was done in Sketch
      • The animation is a mix of Sketch + Adobe After-Effects + Airbnb Lottie https://airbnb.design/lottie/ (A React native animation library that renders After-Effects animation)

Agree with @patchellis! I was going to share my alpha landing page today, but looking at this amazing site, I feel a bit embarrassed!

May 21, 2019 Abyssale alpha release

Our goal was to ship a product with as little features as possible in order to gather feedback asking for specific missing features (we were aware of what was missing) but "artificially" shipping a product lacking in features helped us greatly to shape our product and tech roadmap for the upcoming Beta.

Advice: Ship less is better than too much

  1. 1

Interesting approach. I'm considering something like this myself. How has this worked out for you so far?

Also, when you shipped "less" - how do you determine which features to ship and which to leave for later?
Did you postpone anything that was in your mind a primary feature?

    1. 2
      • So far it is working pretty fine and is giving us enough room to improve the product step by step.

      • TBH most of it was by instinct and what was realistic in terms of dev time, then we did some customer discoveries in order to refine our roadmap.

      • We did postpone a lot of features, and every choice was a tough one... but you need to be as pragmatic as possible and shipping everything is not possible! (or it will take you x months/years before shipping anything at all)

About

Creating advertising assets is a pain for any company sizes, By automating the creation process we help companies focus on their advertising strategy instead of wasting time on tedious tasks.
