My journey building Actimefy — a privacy-first, automatic time-tracker

Hi IH community! I’m the founder of Actimefy, a desktop app that silently tracks your computer activity (apps, windows, websites) and turns it into meaningful insights to help you understand your time and focus.
Here’s the story, what’s working (and what’s not yet), and what I’m learning. I’d love any feedback or questions from this community.

🎯 What is Actimefy?

Actimefy is a lightweight application that runs in the background and does the following:

  • Automatically logs which application/window/website you use, minute by minute — no manual timer start/stop needed.

  • Produces rich visual analytics: dashboards, charts, filters by project/app/time interval.

  • Emphasises privacy: all data stays locally on your machine (no cloud sync by default) to give you control.

  • Customizable: set your tracking intervals, filtering, visual settings.

  • Ideal for freelancers, remote workers, productivity-enthusiasts who want to understand how they spend their time rather than just clock it.

  • Pricing: Free version + Premium upgrade (one-time license ~$19) for advanced features.

🧠 Why I built it

As someone who works at a computer all day, I found myself wondering: Where did the time go?

  • I had plenty of timers and trackers, but either they required constant manual input (which I forgot) or they felt invasive (cloud-upload, monitoring).

  • I wanted visibility into habits (which apps I really spent time in, websites I kept wandering to, projects that absorbed more time than expected).

  • Privacy mattered: I didn’t want yet another cloud service storing my behaviour.

  • I wanted something that just “works quietly” in the background, then provides meaningful visuals when I choose to look.

That motivated Actimefy: automatic, privacy-first, lightweight.

✅ What’s working

  • The automatic tracking works: users report that the “set-and-forget” model (run it once, let it gather data) is appealing.

  • The visual analytics are attracting attention: dashboards + charts make it easier to reflect on your day/week than spreadsheets or manual logs.

  • A niche has emerged: productivity nerds + freelancers + remote workers appreciate the “privacy first” angle.

  • One-time pricing is a differentiator compared to many subscription-only trackers.

  • Minimal CPU/ram overhead so it can run in background without slowing you down.

⚠️ What’s not perfect yet / current challenges

  • Awareness & reviews: On platforms like Capterra, GetApp, etc the product is listed but little (or zero) user reviews so far, which makes it harder to build trust.

  • Integration & ecosystem: As of now, there are limited integrations with other tools (e.g., project management or billing) which many users expect from a time-tracking tool.

  • Platform reach: Mostly Windows (desktop) for now; broader OS support may be needed to expand.

  • Marketing & positioning: Communicating “automatic + privacy” is a compelling hook, but many users still think “time-tracker = manual timers so…” so the mental leap needs addressing.

  • Support / user onboarding: Ensuring that users understand the value quickly (visual dashboards, habit-insights) and not just “another timer tool”.

📣 What’s next

Here’s where I’m headed:

  • Better onboarding & first-day value: Making sure users see an Aha-moment quickly (“Here’s what you did yesterday”) so they stay hooked.

  • More integrations: Linking with billing apps for freelancers to tie tracked time to value.

  • Community & reviews: Encouraging users to leave reviews and share stories of how insights helped them.

🎯 What I’d love from the Indie Hackers community

  • Any feedback on positioning: “automatic time-tracking + privacy” — does that resonate? What other messaging would hit home?

  • Advice on onboarding: what’s the best “first session” experience you’ve seen in a productivity tool that hooked you?

  • Marketing ideas: How do you reach freelancers / remote workers who care about productivity but are tired of “manual timers”?

  • If you’ve tried similar tools, what made you stick (or quit)? Feel free to DM or comment — I’d love to chat.

Thanks for reading! Happy to answer any questions about the build, marketing, lessons learned, or even show screenshots/dashboard if desired.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts & learning from you all!
