May 20, 2026 SEO progress update: building Affordex as a calculator-first product

Hi Indie Hackers 👋

Quick SEO progress update for Affordex.

I’m building Affordex as a calculator-first platform for salary, tax, and take-home pay questions. The first market is Australia, where the tool helps users estimate annual, monthly, weekly, and daily take-home pay after income tax, Medicare levy, and superannuation.

The main growth channel I’m focusing on right now is organic search.

Instead of trying to build a broad finance site immediately, I’m taking a focused approach:

  • Start with one useful calculator

  • Build pages around real salary search intent

  • Improve internal linking between calculator pages

  • Add helpful explanations around take-home pay, tax, and salary comparisons

  • Slowly build authority through founder content, product directories, and clean entity profiles

The early challenge is that SEO for a new domain is slow.

Search engines are discovering the pages, but indexing and ranking take time. I’m trying to stay disciplined and avoid the temptation to publish too broadly or chase random backlinks too early.

Right now, my focus is on three things:

  1. Making the Australia Salary Calculator more useful

  2. Building content around real user questions like “Is $90k a good salary in Australia?” or “How much is $85k after tax?”

  3. Creating a clean entity footprint for Affordex across relevant platforms and founder communities

One lesson so far: calculator products need both utility and explanation.

A calculator can answer the number quickly, but users also need context. They want to know what the result means monthly, weekly, and in real life.

That is where I think the SEO opportunity is.

Not just “salary calculator” pages, but practical pages that help people understand what their salary actually means after tax.

For other founders building SEO-driven tools:

Would you prioritize more long-tail calculator pages first, or fewer pages with stronger content and better UX?

I’m currently leaning toward quality + internal linking first, then scaling pages carefully.

May 18, 2026 Building Affordex: a salary calculator platform starting with Australia

Hi Indie Hackers 👋

I’m building Affordex, a salary and tax calculator platform that helps people understand their real take-home pay after tax.

The idea came from a simple problem: most salary conversations start with gross annual income, but real-life financial decisions depend on how much someone actually keeps each month, week, or day.

For example, when someone sees a salary offer, they usually want to know:

- How much will I actually take home after tax?

- What does this salary mean monthly or weekly?

- How much goes to income tax and required contributions?

- Is this salary enough for my real living costs?

Affordex is starting with Australia because salary calculations include income tax, Medicare levy, and superannuation. The first goal is to make those numbers easier to understand with a simple calculator-first experience.

Right now, I’m focused on:

- Improving the Australia Salary Calculator

- Building SEO-focused salary pages

- Creating useful content around take-home pay

- Expanding the product carefully into more countries and cost calculators

The long-term vision is to build a calculator-first platform for practical financial and cost-of-living decisions across different markets.

I’d love feedback from other founders building SEO-driven tools:

Would you focus first on improving the calculator features, expanding to more countries, or publishing more educational content?

One question I’m thinking about right now:

For an SEO-driven calculator product, would you prioritize improving the core calculator experience first, or expanding into more long-tail pages and markets?

My instinct is to keep improving the Australia calculator while slowly building content and pages around real salary search intent — but I’d love to hear how other founders would approach it.

About

I’m working on Affordex because salary is one of the most important numbers in a person’s life, but it is often not explained in a practical way. Most people see salary as a gross annual number. But real financial decis
