Employee onboarding for remote companies
Woohoo!
Yesterday's book launch on ProductHunt was amazing. So much love and support from the community.
Because of that, we were able to have more than 550 subscribers for the book right from the first day. And it's still growing.
Few more stats:
2,064 - unique visitors
4,079 - page views
733 - unique users read the book online without signing up
Hey Friends,
Today is finally the day. I just launched the Company Culture book I was working on at Product Hunt. If you find the guide helpful any support is much appreciated 😊
This guide is packed with knowledge on how to build a culture in the hyper-connected, global, remote, Slack generation. In nine chapters, covering tips and tricks of using Slack for the greater good, based on advice from team members of well established remote companies like Dribbble, GitHub, InVision and Automattic.
I also wanted to share something more unique to this community on the launch day. As this was my first book and trust me I’m not a writer, it was challenging. Here are a few stats from the process of making the book:
🗓️Roughly 4 weeks of work
☎️Research calls with Dribbble, Automattic, InVision, GitHub, Balsamiq
👩🎨$620 spent on illustrations (cover + chapters)
🖋️$1,200 spent on an Editor who polished the final version

Hey folks, @mattpupa gave me a great idea to share a preview from the guide over here. So, here's one chapter on General tips around communication/culture over Slack when you working fulltime remote.
Let me know what you think or directly comment in the doc.

Liked the part about working asynchronous hours. Very crucial for remote teams. Also, I did some work for a remote team where they had a 'ask a coworker friday', where the head of HR would throw out a random question, and everyone would answer it. It was a cool way to get to know people better, even if they lived on the other side of the planet.
Even when I'm still 1-2 weeks before launching the ebook I got the initial LP out already.
As I'm going through the checklist of things to do I didn't see a reason why not to silently launch the page already.
Btw, all done through Webflow.

Before spending time and $$ on building the MVP I decided to write a short ebook, a guide called:
Remote Company Culture for Slack Generation
It's about creating and shaping a healthy company culture in remote companies. All based on best practices from companies like InVision, GitHub, Dribbble or Automattic. Full of tips and tricks on what to do and don't.
While it's going to be free, downloading a PDF/ePUB will go through email signup to build an audience for a later product launch.
Current status:
I'm 95% done writing, now just need an editor to go over it and format it all with illustrations, screenshots, etc ... Hopefully launching in a week or two.

What's one example of a lesson that will be in the ebook? It might be useful to give people a preview here
I took advantage of the fact that I worked at invisionapp.com as Creative Manager for a while and made a great network of friends who now work in various remote companies.
So, I pulled all favors and got research calls scheduled with people from different departments in companies like Invision, Github, Dribbble, Automattic, ...
Each interview was focused on questions around company culture and employee onboarding for specific departments. With tons of insights, I certainly validated my initial hypothesis on the ineffectiveness of employee onboarding and how unnecessarily expensive it gets on the way.
And I got some initial interest to try it out once I have a beta. Which potentially might be a way to go for me. To get an MVP and build a product around 2-3 companies that I have a close relationship with and know that they would be open to help shape this tool.
Results:
I'm definitely moving forward to build this :)

While still having a fulltime job, I decided to move to Lisbon, Portugal for 1 month to focus on shaping the idea I had for a while around employee onboarding for remote companies.
The goal was simple:
First, validate the idea by doing tons of research and find a market fit. And secondly, figure out the initial plan on how to launch it.

I've been building teams and helping to shape company culture in remote companies for the past few years. And knowing how uneffective the employee onboarding process is, I decided to build a tool to simply solve it.
